The best installments since GEN II in my opinion. The story, while still pretty shallow, was improved upon and shows potential for deeper plot lines. The new generation was actually pretty cool (with a few exceptions) and the new battle structures really added new difficulty to a series known for its lack of challenge. The visuals took full advantage of the DS's hardware and looks extremely impressive by itself. And finally, the C-Gear improved the communication experience completely and allowed for a more casual approach to trading and battling. Oh yeah, and the Unova region feels the most diverse, ranging from many cultures from Japan and the US. And of course it continues the tradition of excellent music. Keep this going, Game Freak.
