Releasing only a year after its spectacular prequel, Wario Land 4 takes a lot of steps down the generic path to be a better competitor with all of the other platformers at the time, and it does lose some of its charm because of that unfortunately. The chore of having to race back to the beginning of the stage and the addition of a health bar felt unnecessary and diminished the game's quality. However, of all of the things it didn't need to change, the unique aesthetics and simplistically fun gameplay can't be ignored. Goddamn, this is one WEIRD game, but it's strange titles like Wario Land 4 that stick with you as you continue games. A decade later, and the appeal still resonates from its different approach to the puzzle platformer.
