    Saved!
I remember enjoying this as a child, but it's actually even better than I recalled. It dawned on me that the whole world portrayed is what might be the perspective of a child, with the idiot teacher and jovial candy store owner and, of course, the ridiculous level of importance placed upon getting a Golden Ticket. The kids are all great (and damn the girl who played Veruca really sold it; she's like the archetypal spoiled brat in culture now, wow. Not a bad singer either.) and Gene Wilder is a fantastic Willy Wonka. As opposed to Depp's complete zaniness this Wonka has a veneer of charm and good grace, and only as things start to go unexpected do the guests get a bit of an inkling about how disturbed he might be. Just a wonderfully charming movie.

Editing … Yeah, the Veruca Salt actresses were actually show-stealers in both adaptations, I thought.
