Man, I want more games like Final Fantasy VII-X. A lot of the time when I try non-FF RPGs that are well received, I'm not into them. I not that into Star Ocean 1, Dragon Quest II, IV, VII, or IX, Radiant Historia, Shin Megami Tensei games that aren't modern Persona, Phantasy Star 1-4, Dragon Age Origins, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate, Torchlight II, Morrowind, Fallout 4, Etrian Odyssey games after the first one, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, Chrono Trigger and Cross, The Legend of Dragoon, Mass Effect, Dark Souls, The Witcher, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Kingdom Hearts, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Symphonia, The World Ends With You, Valkyrie Profile, Disgaea 1-2, Dragon's Dogma, Odin Sphere, Golden Sun, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and Diablo II.

That said, I did like Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, Etrian Odyssey, Dragon Quest I and VIII, Dark Cloud 1, Paper Mario 1 and 2, and lots of Pokemon games because they were just fun. They didn't have engrossing stories like FF, but if I could find more fun games like those it would be nice.

Editing … I played the first one and liked it alright but didn't beat it. For a while I was really liking it but I ran into a boss where the giant robot things were basically required and and I haven't bought anything for them and there was no way to access a shop from that point. Later I tried to start over but I couldn't get into it again. I think I ended up giving it a 7.

Editing … Haven't tried Earthbound. I might actually like that one when I get around to it. Haven't tried South Park The Stick of Truth because the last season of South Park I liked was 11 and the gameplay footage I've seen hasn't intrigued me. I also tried Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga and didn't like the controls. I stopped playing The Banner Saga because one of my biggest pet peeves is when I make a bad decision in a choice and feel guilty because the writing wasn't absolutely crystal clear. Never happens with the dialogue options in Persona 3 and 4. I've never tried Super Mario RPG, I've seen clips and I don't like the isometric look, but maybe it'd be fun.

Editing … I stopped watching South Park consistently after Season 10, and the last season I liked without reservation was probably Season 8, but I still laughed like an idiot at the Stick of Truth. The Fractured But Whole, not so much, but the first game is legit. Super Mario RPG is a lot more like the Paper Marios than the Mario & Luigi games, so there's that. I'm not sure what you mean by "crystal clear," but yeah, the Banner Saga doesn't present you with many easy decisions, which I find refreshing. Despite most of the story being entirely text, a lot of the choices and sequences had my heart pounding harder than in any Bioware RPG. My frustrations with the series stems more from moments like "You're leaving the party? The hell you are! I spent a bajillion renown leveling you up and you still have my best item equipped! Hey, get your ass back here!"

Editing … I didn't mean the decisions weren't easy. I mean, there were times things had consequences I couldn't have predicted based on how the choice was written. The Banner Saga was neat though, I can see why people would like it.

Editing … I don't know what you're referring to without examples. I can't think of any undesirable choice-based outcome that didn't feel like a perfectly reasonable possibility given the setting.

Editing … I think there was one part where I decided to call up to one guy and my character got really aggressive and I didn't realize he was going to, I thought he was going to talk like normal. If I'm remembering that right. I can't abide stuff like that. I hate confusion and miscommunication.

Editing … The only example of that I can think of off hand is in the Witcher 2 where Roche introduces himself and reaches out for a handshake while Geralt's hands are tied behind his back. One of the dialogue options says "Very funny," and if you select it Geralt will say "Fuck you."

Editing … Hotel Dusk's dialogue options were also very non-problematic. More games like Hotel Dusk would also be cool. A lot of the visual novel stuff I see is anime dating porn. Persona takes out the porn element and its anime-ness isn't as visually generic as in most games. That's another thing I like about Final Fantasy. It only kind of looks like anime. It's hard for me to get into something anime if it's not visually distinctive. If I see portraits that just look like every anime ever, it's a huge turn off. Even Etrian Odyssey's have their own style.
