I kind of had felt something similar to the Seinfeld effect when I was reading this, in the sense that everything this book did that was groundbreaking I have seen countless times already in other adaptations of the Batman mythos, so I didn't feel blown away by anything. I feel like Batman Mask of the Phantasm explores the Batman's origins with greater depth and sophistication than what is offered in this book. Getting to see Bruce deal with his parents' death and its effects on his psyche, and that incredible scene where we watch him put on the cowl for the first time went way beyond the characterization that he was given in the entire comic in my opinion. Mask of the Phantasm even had a similar police confrontation scene which I also think it did better because the stakes were so high. That being said, the art in this comic is really impressive and I enjoyed the amount of focus that was given to Jim Gordon in this comic because he has always been one of my favorite characters. Overall, Batman Year One was a very engaging, light read that left me wanting a little more.

Editing … I think the book is at its best when it's focusing on Jim. The foundation for the modern Gordon is all there.
