"Blackwell Legacy" is a modern point-n-click adventure that really feels like it was kickstarted.

You play an unlikeable misanthrope with next-to-no life of her own, who suddenly on the one hand gains the power of talking to a ghost, but on the other is burdened with the obligation to help other ghosts "move on" -- Ghost Whisperer: The Game. Apart from two minutes of denial, she is totally okay with how events unfold for her. Just like that. I mean, why wouldn't she be? It's not like this burden confronts her daily life as it was before. As I said earlier: she had no life.

… It's all just not that believable, at least not for me.

The voice acting varies greatly, from exceptionally good to amateur-ish performances. If I had to guess why, I'd say some of the VAs were hired professionals while others were next-door neighbors or colleagues. However, apart from the occasional blowing into the microphone (especially on the "th"s) which slightly breaks the immersion, it's overall satisfying.

When the "overall satisfying" voice over and the music constantly compete over "screen time" (… speaker time?), however, it becomes obvious that the volume management is downright poor. Again, the word "amateur" comes to mind. I wish they'd spent more time on the sound mixing.

The game design comes down to a somewhat simplified point-n-clicking mechanic, paired with a Syberia-esque notepad. Instead of verbs there is only RIGHT-CLICK to examine and LEFT-CLICK to interact. You cannot use items on the world: the contextual interaction changes automatically depending on whether or not you possess them or not – which is kinda smart. But also … simplified.

The notebook determines what you can talk about with NPCs. However, unlike in Syberia, you can combine clues to create new clues – which in itself is a great idea but no there's tutorial for this whatsoever. I'm talking about "learning by doing, you didn't even notice this was a tutorial" tutorial. So, even though this is a "good" characteristic, at the same time it's also a "bad" characteristic.

Shortly leaving the game (ALT+TAB and SHIFT+TAB alike) unfortunately breaks the engine, with sound files not playing anymore, until you quit and relaunch —› Save often!

Other than that what else is there to say? It's short. But it's enjoyable. And it comes with a dev commentary.

… I'm sorry for making the game sound so bad. It's not. It could have been better with a week or a month more work, but without this nitpicking, the bottom line is that it's enjoyable. And it's the bottom line that counts. Give it a try.
