"According to Kauder the main reason for this decision, is to secure fairness in the upcoming German elections"

"conditions, similar to the ones during the American Presidential Elections Campaign, must not occur in Germany "

Basically We must clamp down on free speech so the peasants dont think for themselves and the candidate we want will get in.

Editing … So what are you arguing? Fake news should just be able to spread like wildfire on social media unchallenged? There should be no consequences for blatant hate speech and racism?

Editing … Heaven forbid we place the responsibility of verifying the validity of news on the common man. He cannot handle the responsibility. We shall just have to decide for him what news he sees! If people spread fake news articles it is because they are fucking idiots who cannot spend 2 seconds checking a source. We shouldn't have to coddle these morons.

Editing … Fake news is a genuine problem. Wildly exaggerated or outright cock and bull stories and statistics someone pulled out of their ass because it suits their agenda etc are bad for a democracy. Social media's giving them a new way to spread like wildfire and social media isn't accountable in the same way the traditional media is. Obviously a cure that's worse than the disease is no good so I'm against outright censorship but if facebook comes up with a mechanism where if enough people flag a story as fake (not just controversial, outright factually dishonest) and someone professional verifies that then I have no calms with facebook putting a warning label on it or something.

Editing … It won't work like that though, the threat of fines will force it into a youtube-copyright scenario. Things will be taken down out of precaution and then only replaced once verified. That would mean genuine articles could be flagged and taken down wrongly. I'd much rather people were just taught to think for themselves, but maybe I am just asking too much.
