In its own right #Bloodborne is a good game; great level design, lovecraftian gothic atmosphere, an intertwining map of shortcuts to slowly unravel, tight melee combat with a fast pace and a risk/reward mechanic where you regain health through counter attacks. Thing is, whenever I go from playing the #Dark Souls series to playing this it inescapably feels like a poor relation.

It borrows massively from the Souls series but there are still some major gameplay differences. Unfortunately most of them are changes for the worse.
The option to put a shield or another weapon of your choice in your left hand is switched out for having no choice but to use guns which can stun with a well timed shot but have limited range, barely do any damage and use ammo that's annoyingly scarce.
Instead of an enormous variety of weapons with unique movesets you have a very small choice of -admittedly stylish - trick weapons.
The choice of armour's far smaller as well and mostly for appearance since they make very little difference to how much damage you take and no difference to movement.
Estus flasks (upgrade-able healing potions that replenish every time you die) are replaced by healing consumables that you have to buy or farm annoyingly frequently. Whether you're summoning or being summoned the co-op mechanics are poorer and you can't rest at lamps (bonfires) or fast travel without going back to the hub first. There's no equivalent at all for enchanted rings, pyromancy, sorcery, or miracles.
All in all Bloodborne is way shallower and less of an RPG. Your freedom for choosing your playstyle's very limited.

Credit where it's due since it's not a direct sequel Bloodborne feels a lot fresher than another Dark Souls sequel and the Lovecraft inspired lore is very well done and makes for a real change from dark fantasy. The intertwining open world of branching paths and shortcuts is something very few games can hold a candle to and a huge redeeming feature. #From Softwarere definitely one of the best developers out there at the moment, even their weaker games deserve a lot of praise.

Editing … I liked that ranged attacks were limited. Meant you couldn't cheese through the game and it generally felt nicely balanced. I remember when the Shadow of Yharnam showed up and I was all "Oh crap, multi target boss, DS II all over again, here comes the pain..." and then I start fighting them and was all "Holy shit! The dodging is super responsive! I've gotten them down halfway without taking a hit! They're not all bum rushing me! This is how it's supposed to be! THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!" Of course Lady Maria and the Orphan of Kos were cruel and unusual, but I won't hold my frustrations with the Old Hunters against the base game.

Editing … Obviously ranged attacks couldn't be gamebreakingly powerful either but I don't think the devs struck the right balance. Bloodborne firearms have less range, let you carry less ammo and/or do less damage than the archery/sorcery in Dark Souls and yet unlike the ranged attacks in Dark Souls they're not an optional playstyle, they're something that you have to use because the game won't let you have a shield/second melee weapon.

Editing … You can make it through the game just fine without firearms, hence the two-handed weapons and hunter tools. Bullets are also basically unlimited for a skilled player via the blood bullet technique since the regain system allows them to immediately regenerate the lost health. Even if you're not skilled enough to pull that off you can still regenerate with blood vials so you've basically got a tweaked version of the Ashen Estus flask. I mean how would guns doing more damage improve the game? They already allow you to dish out tons of damage via counters, are incredibly useful for interrupting attacks, and can do a decent amount of damage if you invest sufficiently in your bloodtinge stat, but the base damage should be higher still? They'd be going to the trouble of making a fast, intense action game only to ruin it by allowing you to sit at a distance cheaply pelting away at the toughest enemies, y'know, kinda like Dark Souls.

Editing … I'm okay with the firearms barely having any range so you can't snipe from a distance. My gripe is that on top of that they barely do any damage and you can barely carry any ammo so you have to fuel the gun from your own health in areas where enemies don't drop it. Mildly easier parrying is a pretty mediocre reward for giving up the option of shields/second melee weapons. Since armour's mediocre as well the only viable playstyle is based on rapid dodging and up close melee.

Editing … I played a few more hours of Bloodborne today, the level design really is fantastic and I appreciate the faster dodging but the borderline useless guns and unpatched flaws like the need to go back to early levels and farm the healing potions now and again and the inability to rest at lamps or warp between them without going back to the Hunter's Dream make it more of a grind than it should be.

Editing … Shotgun parry is so fuckin cool! i can't put my finger on why Dark Souls 3 felt so mediocre after bloodborne, maybe because it catered to my playstyle as i always tried to play souls games aggressively by abusing the parry system. I like that there was less inventory clutter. I usually stick to the same 2 or 3 weapons in souls anyway as you tend to build stats around a particular weapon. I adore the health regain system and the flashyness of the combat, DS3 didn't feel as satisfying and visceral, i don't know how to explain it. Im glad people are still enjoying the Souls series but I no longer have the enthusiasm for it. Id take a sequel to bloodborne and would be excited for it, but id much prefer to see the combat system reinvented once again with a new aesthetic
