    Pros:
It's 8th gen Dark Souls. Great bosses, fantastic level and creature design, co-op and pvp blended seamlessly with a single player story and lore and backstory you can piece together from details in the world around you. It's a challenging series but always balanced and all kinds of playstyles are viable. The series still has my favourite swordplay in videogaming and the sheer variety of weapons each with unique movesets makes almost every other RPG look bad (and that's before you get into the variety of shields, armour, rings, consumables, miracles, pyromancies and sorceries).

    Cons:
It still falls short of the original in most of the same ways Dark Souls II did. My main gripe is that it doesn't have the intertwining world of branching passages and shortcuts that the first Dark Souls had and being able to warp between bonfires from the very beginning takes away from exploration. They also nonsensically repeated Dark Souls II and Bloodborne's most annoying flaw and made you go through two loading screens every time you want to level up rather than just letting you do it at any bonfire.

Editing … I feel like more than any other game in the series they made it way too easy to fuck up side quests and be blocked off from certain endings.

Editing … I actually had the full pick of endings on my first playthrough. Spoiler Yoel's free 5 levels was too tempting and if you beat Oceiros and get to the Untended Graves then it's hard to miss the Firekeeper Eyes. I went with Usurpation of Fire, breaking the cycle seemed like the best ending for the series. I really like that there are endings that hinge on you finding optional areas and not missing NPC interactions but yeah, more than one ending for the players that just go straight through the game without exploring wouldn't have been a bad thing.

Editing … Completely agree with your review, you nailed the pros and cons. I still gave it a 7 because the lack of DS1 world-design quality really detracted from the game, and the fact that the game looks, feels and plays virtually identical to DS1 was very dissaponting to me.

Editing … I gave it a 9 whereas for me Dark Souls 1 is a 10 and still the best game in the series. I feel that's fair; giving it a 7 just for not having the kind of brilliant intertwining semi-open world that very few games offer would've felt overly harsh. It has almost all of the same strengths as the first game and considering I disliked a lot of the changes Bloodborne made to the Souls series formula I'm glad DSIII wasn't a radical departure from everything the earlier games got right.

Editing … By the way, has anyone played Ashes of Ariandel?
