    Spooky Scary Horrorthons 3 - Film #2

Filthy is a word that I would use to describe The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, because from the very first seconds this film just feels filthy. A macabre sculpture of human remains gets all the focus from the camera as a news anchor barks on in the background about horrific crimes and death, two subjects that will be given great amounts of attention in this film.

The typical group of teenagers on their way to certain death get their first lick with terror when they make the unwise decision to pick up a hitchhiker in the middle of nowhere, a decision that leads to an extremly uncomfortable encounter that ends with a vicious knife attack. Obviously the terror doesn't end when they throw out the hitchhiker, they haven't even met his family yet!

Soon the unlucky group runs out of gas and they are now stuck in the deepest parts of the southern US without any means of transportation. They find a nearby house that may have some gas in it and without any warning he appears. Leatherface. Everyone's favorite hillbilly psycho, the man that popularized the chainsaw as a tool of murder and the man that pulls double duty as the clumsy son and passionate housewife. Slowly and surely he sends the teenagers to their doom, like lambs to the slaughter, apparently his family has quite the history with the meat industry. Soon there is only one female left in the group, barely alive and with the lingering threat of chainsaw constantly around. Just when she thinks that she is safe she is pulled right back in, the family seems to be everywhere.

The final act of the film is a disturbing dinner scene that really gets under your skin. The bizarre house decorations made out of bones, the frantic camera work and the desperate screams from our poor heroine. Now interestingly enough the fact that a girl is about to be eaten doesn't stop the backwoods family from worrying about everyday issues such as monstrous electricity bills and broken down doors. The horrifying events of this film is no devious plot or vengeful revenge plot, it is just a family minding their daily business.

Eventually the poor girl manages to escape the clutches of her demented hosts and by pure chance she manages to hop onto a truck and escape into the sunset as Leatherface goes absolutely mad with his chainsaw. The credits roll but The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remains as the quintessential hillbilly horror flick and one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

Editing … You should watch the second one too if you have time. It's not a serious horror film but it's by the same director and is really ridiculous. One of my favorite horror comedies.

Editing … I think I will force myself through this entire franchise at some point even though the fourth installment is supposedly one of the worst films of all time, just for the sake of completion.
