I would describe my relationship with Jason Statham to be a love/hate one, a relationship that has started to become quite abusive. But like the abused spouse I am I keep coming back thinking "It's okay he's changed this time, it's going to be okay" - well that's not true at all now is it. Wild Card is yet another horrible Jason Statham vehicle that I've forced myself to watch, something that has became a trend for me since Blitz. It's directed by the always awful - hack of a director - Simon West, who, according to IMDb, is of Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up music video fame - Christ you don't want me to like you at all do you West. Out of the many bad Statham vehicles that I've subjected myself to this has to be up there as one of the worst. It took close to 40min - in a 90min run time - to see Statham perform any sort of violent action and what I witnessed was a very typical - lazily shot - modern day action sequence, you know the type of action sequence where the director only believes that slow-motion or cocaine induced choppy editing techniques can create believable tension. There are three sequences like this and they're just the worse. But seriously that's the problem here, that there's only three shit action sequences in my Statham vehicle driven film - like wtf. I mean the movie's not going to become suddenly better if they add more action sequences but Christ at least I'll see Statham doing something he's actually good at - and hell, there's a chance I might even like a few of them. And I'm not saying that Statham is a bad actor, per se, but that I believe that what falls into his wheelhouse is limited. He's good at being a snarky, charismatic, British guy who beats people up, and really not much else. So as far as minimum expectations go that's what I expect from a Statham headed film, but this cannot even get that right. So what I'm left with is a film that has poorly developed characters who speak in exposition - cause god forbid you put effort into establishing complex characters - that see in muddled flashbacks that mean fuck all to me. It's a harmless, incredibly lazy, film that I find no enjoyment in what so ever.
