I replayed a good deal of this alongside the new Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and it was a blast seeing how the scenes compare to each other. One thing I had forgotten about the original was just how atrocious the translation was. There are scenes where the dialogue between characters is entirely indecipherable. But it doesn't ultimately matter, as the game is simple to navigate and it never feels like you are lost at any point. Such a great game. Barret is my favourite character in both versions. He's GOAT.

Just replayed this with tons of nice mods -- better textures, better character models, even a few nicely redone movies.... but I was really really impressed with **voice acting**. They narrated ALL the lines (and even movies), and it is actually quite good work!

Editing … What took me a little longer was: (i) Choose what mods I actually wanted; (ii) Make it so Steam would still record achievements and playing time, and (iii) Make it convenient with Big Picture, so I did not need to leave the couch to use mouse or keyboard after the initial setup. At the end, I was extremely successful with all 3 things, and I am not a programmer or anything like that.

Editing … A few hints if you ever go this way: (i) Install the Steam game on a data drive (meaning, not on "Program Files", but on a "D:" drive or something), so you do not have to worry about admin privileges and such. (ii) Inside 7th Heaven, under "Settings"/"Game Driver"/"Advanced" there is a "Steam Compatibility" switch. Turn it on to keep Steam on the loop (achievements and playing time).

Editing … Finally, if you care about the Big Picture experience: (i) Import "7th Heaven" to Steam using "Add a Non-Steam game to my Library"; then (ii) inside Steam give it the following launch options: "/PROFILE:Default /LAUNCH /QUIT". This way 7th Heaven launches FF7 automatically, and quits when you end the game, returning you to Big Picture.

Still feels weird to play this on a PC, but this was one of the first really good ports back in 1997. And with the Steam version I don't have to worry about owning a "Monster 3D card" or a decent MIDI player anymore. :-P

I mean, I still have to download the key mapper for my Logitech controller, but the Steam is the best. I dig it.

Out of nowhere, I needed to mention that I really fucking love this game. The graphics are mind blowing for 1997 and I still really like the style and colors of it, very unique. Nothing else will quite look like it. The soundtrack still hits close to home. I remember growing up, this game gave me a more powerful sense of nostalgia than almost anything else, because it's so odd yet also so personal. Moments like SpoilerAeris' Mom telling her story, Barrett's anguish after the plate falls, the date at the Gold Saucer, Tifa's theme playing when you enter 7th Heaven, Aeris' dying, and more all had a big impact on me. There's good bits of humor and odd charm mixed in too, it's not just drama. And as popular as it is, it's such a weird, mysterious game. In a way, I still don't feel like I "get" it. But that's part of the charm.

Editing … Oh I definitely like some more than others. The system in IX is pretty blah to me. Once I got the hang of the Junction system in VIII I loved it. I also really like the Job System in V, it's okay in III. The Sphere Grid in X is simple but feels really cool. I didn't care about the materia system in VII as a kid but now I like it, it's fun to level it up. Materia fusion in Crisis Core is really cool, I can get my HP to 9999 long before the game is over, which is really important on Hard mode. IV doesn't really have a system, you just kinda get abilities as you level up.

Final Fantasy VII is a game that promises a lot during the first couple of hours, but fails to deliver on the long run. First and foremost, the juvenile, or should I say, kids' cartoon plot is really engaging, I like most of the characters and the way the story (and death) was handled. The graphics are really good and the soundtrack is something worth listening during the day. I don't like the random battles, the minigames, the huge amount of filler content, but the good outweigh the bad. I didn't actually finish the game, because it froze once and the final boss killed me twice. As I was feeling like I was wasting my time (especially because the Supernova animation takes a lot of minutes), I decided to give up and just watch the ending on Youtube. When a game feels like a waste of time, the best thing to do is just let it go. Overall I enjoyed FFVII, it is not the best JRPG ever (I prefer Panzer Dragoon Saga and Chrono Trigger), but a very good one. Now I'm ready to try FF IX.

Since killing stuff is the main mechanic of the game (I don't think you can get experience otherwise), I am forced to kill thousands of innocent creatures for sake of it. That's probably a JRPG thing, but I prefer if I am given the choice to spare some enemies in RPGs." - Yea, it's a hallmark of almost all JRPG's. Wouldn't be an FF game without it :) You have to remember this was back when games were just made to be fun, and didn't need to make sense

Finished it just before the end of holidays, last time I did I think I was 15 or so. Apart from the graphics and some pacing issues towards the end it's still a fun game. I'd forgotten a lot about the story, it has a very pro-planet message that is even more relevant now than it was back then. It's odd playing something so old that doesn't feel out of place with current events, but it was a nice surprise. I like the writing style in the older FF games. It can still be cheesy and emotional, but the dialog moves at a fast pace so you never get bogged down in it. I'd also completely forgotten about the "500 years later" scene! I'd actually like to see a game set in that period rather than a remake now lol.

Editing … The Simpsons is my number 1 show and there's a lot of other comedies on my list, but I bet I wouldn't like quite a few of them if I saw them for the first time. I'm not nearly as into comedy as I used to be and it's hard for TV to get me to laugh a lot, though I do like Frasier and American Dad a lot these days. I really like to take stuff seriously, but I also like more optimistic stuff than I did as a kid. Really, comedy is generally very mean spirited and cynical at it's core, while I find shows like Buffy and Star Trek The Next Generation optimistic, even though they're dramas and plenty of bad things happen, especially in Buffy. I find the feeling of caring to be a positive one. And I hardly need to mention how optimistic Pony is or how much I care about it. In short, it's not easy to get me to have dumb fun these days, and even as a kid I think I took media more seriously than most kids, and dumb fun is never what I cared about most. South Park is the funniest show I've ever seen and it's not in my top ten. When I was a kid, instead of silly shows being my favorites it was Digimon and Samurai Jack (though both shows seem much sillier now that I'm older).
