So the original OVA of this relaxing manga only had two freaking episodes. And the quality of the hand-drawn frames is absolutely top tier. Sure, there's almost no plot, but the subtle, laidback environment of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (a.k.a. Yokohama Shopping Log) really shines over all of its shortcomings.

This was also one of the first shows that started the Iyashikei movement of anime, which focused entirely on relaxation and healing.. Yeah, the tone of this early OVA tends to put people to sleep, but just think--it actually sparked a new trend of cute moe animation that would gradually consume the modern anime industry of the late 2010s/early 2020s.

Editing … I really liked it when I read it. You should check out Girls' Last Tour if you haven't yet, it has a similar vybe, tho a bit darker.

Editing … Let me say off the bat. This does look good. I'd read it. Second; That tidbit about relaxation/healing intrigues me. I lately find manga to be punchy and overstimulating, and wondering why doesn't someone make a less hormonal, more soul nurturing reading experience. But I suppose, they already have? Something to look into I guess. It's too bad I gave up Kindle after accidentally buying a book I didn't mean to for the umpteenth time. (That and the reading experience generally being shit, with the app crashing at minimum once when opening a book for the first time.)

Editing … Yeah, the average anime fan would really want a punchy, overstimulating show. But Iyashikei qualities gradually creeped into the less mainstream shows in the 2000s, from Haibane Renmei to Maria Watches Over Us. Now we have bigger budget shows like Aria and Laid-Back Camp catching mainstream success. It's a surprising trend, but hey, the anime studios saw their opportunity and went all in at the right time.

Editing … I can't explain the hardcore craze over Laid-Back Camp, though. I mean, camping and cute characters are cool, but that series now has a ton of sold-out merch, an upcoming movie, a third season, and a lot of figurines.

Editing … Girls Last Tour is awesome. I would ask for a sequel, but that series did end pretty conclusively (sniff).

Editing … The funny thing is. Laid Back Camp might not even qualify as what I'm looking for. It's hard to say without watching it, but the fact it has a lot of merch is rather telling, imo. It's probably a waifu infatuation anime and very shallow.

Editing … Yeah, the national park areas in Laid-Back Camp are so realistic that this shouldn't count as a genuine Iyashikei show. However, the relaxing music and the art style borrows so much from those genres that it actually is Iyashikei. I've just accepted that fact. And you're right, it borrowed from the waifu craze of K-On. But the camping situations are so realistic that it almost feels like a camping simulator?

Editing … I feel like some anime wizards just brainstormed some extreme marketing manifesto and it eventually turned into the Laid-Back Camp empire. I once thought that it had a cult following, but goddamn, the popularity shot up during the pandemic.

Editing … And I haven't even mentioned the VR games for Laid-Back Camp. Did you guys know that there's some $20 games where we can camp with Rin and Nadeshiko in virtual reality? The experience is probably shallow compared to Job Simulator, but hey, it exists. That anime is money.

Editing … many good dramas on TV. lawyer shows and such. The characters are actual adults. Cerebral situations. Would be neat if they were adapted 1:1 to comics. I'd try doing it myself if I were crazy enough.
