Kevin Feige is taking over X-Men and Fantastic Four, and Bob Iger says there shouldn't be "two Marvels," so it's probably time to say adieu to the best superhero film series we've had.

Editing … The way I see it, the MCU's got the most bland and generic movies of the bunch, their shtick's as predictable as a Disney princess flick. The X-Men's got shit like 3, Origins, and Apocalypse, but then it's also got some of the very best the superhero genre has to offer, like First Class, Days of Future Past, two Deadpools, and Logan. These movies are also some of the riskiest superhero movies ever made, being titles that completely forewent past entries, retconned the past, or were R-rated comedies or western dramas. Plus an upcoming superhero horror movie? That's risky as shit, X-Men actually tries new things, and whether it pays off or not, it's better worth watching than something I've basically already seen before. I don't expect Marvel to be taking any risks with the X-Men, not unless they're getting TV shows. Their movies are best summed up as just typical.

Editing … anyway I'm gonna really miss seeing those risks taken, cuz as much as I like plenty MCU entries (GotG 1 & 2, Iron Man 3 are my tops--yeah, real big fan of 3) nothing tickles my fancy like the X-Men's best. It seems like almost every MCU movie gets hailed as the "best one yet," and then I watch it and think "well, it's sort of the same as the last one." There come along exceptions, but generally, the experience feels stale.

Disney's received court approval to acquire Fox's assets, so I guess the X-Men film series might be seeing its end. It's possible that the franchise will continue after joining the MCU, with multiverse shenanigans merging the casts, but if Marvel's got creative control then I can't imagine that X-Men will still take the risks it has before.
Obviously I hope it will. X-Men has generic entries, but the ones people remember most are the ones that took the huge risks: the ones that replaced everyone with a younger cast, that retconned everything before them, that were R-rated comedies, or R-rated westerns. Plus an upcoming... teen horror? The MCU films I remember most are the ones that aren't set on Earth.

What are the chances that X-Men will continue with the trend of creativity it's set? I don't want to sigh at Whedonesque humor in X-Men. I don't :(

Editing … My personal hope is that X-Men would remain its own thing and mostly isolated except possibly with multiverse crossovers and FF and all related characters would be wholly incorporated into the MCU (with no origin movie!). The X-Men would feel a bit out of place in the world that's been built so far, whether it's a continuation of the old franchise or a reboot. Let the Inhumans continue to be the main Mutant stand-ins in the MCU and occasionally introduce an individual mutant here or there without the team.

Editing … The Fantastic Four on the other hand would easily fit into the story and tone of the MCU and could be great crossover material with practically anyone (I'd love to see them encounter Spidey or Hulk or Stark or even Ant-Man). And Doom would be a great multi-movie arc or just recurring villain like the likes of Loki. Just plop them in a team-up movie or even give them their own show and let things progress naturally.

Editing … Dr. Doom would honestly be best used as the biggest baddy--there was even a point when he acquired the Infinity Gauntlet, but he wouldn't be using it like a middle schooler who'd just learned philosophy from Light Yagami. By some counts, he's the most powerful Marvel villain.

Editing … I'm not sure if he should be a Thanos level threat. Maybe for comic reading audiences, but most of the viewership (including myself) doesn't read Marvel and thinks of him as a street level villain. If he isn't handled really carefully and used to his full potential then going from Thanos to Doom could feel like a step down to a lot of people.

Editing … I was asleep, so late reply. Pretty much what Rob said, the X-Men films have their own canon. The MCU gets its own separate page from Marvel, DCEU gets its own separate page from #Detective Comics Comics, it just makes sense that the XMCU is separated from the generic franchise page, so the live-action films and animated projects aren't combined together, and users can express their love for the live-action FOX films over the everything-else.
