Editing … Nintendo have had the same strategy for three consoles in a row. They rely on exclusives and gimmicks rather than actually trying to compete with PlayStation/Xbox/PC for hardware power or offering something you can play all the best multiplatform games on. Wii U was just the one with the weakest gimmick.

Is this the first Nintendo console (besides the Virtual Boy, that doesn't count) not to have its own exclusive Zelda game?
I mean, Breath of the Wild will also be launching on Switch, and will probably always be thought of as a Switch game. Do we still count it as "a Wii U exclusive with a Switch rerelease?"
    NES: Zelda, Zelda 2
    SNES: Link to the Past
    GB: Link's Awakening
    N64: Ocarina, Majora
    GBC: Oracles
    GBA: Four Swords, Minish Cap
GC: Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures
Wii: Skyward Sword (I honestly don't know where Twilight Princess goes, it's rather like Breath of the Wild)
    DS: Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
3DS: Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes

What do you have, Wii U?
Two HD remasters and a multi-gen release. (Multi-gen? Are we beginning the 9th generation of gaming? What is this?)

I dunno, I'm kinda disappointed that we never got a Zelda game designed specifically with a TV + second screen in mind. These new iterations always made use of the new unique hardware (for better or for worse).

Editing … Most of these games were later released on other platforms, I was just going based off of the one they were initially announced and released for. In this case, though, multiple platforms are announced before its release, even though I think it will land on Wii U first (and be "exclusive" for like all of two months). Hyrule Warriors wasn't announced for 3DS until spending a while on Wii U. Still, having a rerelease so soon after the original launch does ruin an attempt to call it "exclusive," you're right.

Editing … I don't see it as a Wii U problem specifically so much as Zelda games taking longer and longer to make, while ninty's console cycles becoming shorter and shorter. Even if breath of the wild was WiiU exclusive it would have been too late to save the wiiu. People actually wanted a new Zelda game as a launch window title.

Not betting powerful enough to share multiplatform games with PS4/XB1 and a weak tablet controller gimmick looked like a bad combination as soon as they announced it.

Competing systems simply dominate my time and interest while Nintendo libraries slowly get to a late point where I finally see a benefit to owning one. The Switch is actually the soonest I've ever bought a Nintendo system, but if I didn't have daughters to influence that decision, the Switch wouldn't have been any different.

Editing … The problem with the console is that it is too over-complicated. I mean why spend more money to port your games to a console that is super different from it's competitors, so the console never gets games. No one besides Nintendo really knows what they hell they are doing with the gamepad. PS4, and Xbox One are the clear winners of this gen because are getting the big generation defining games while the Wii U is getting Smash 4, and Zelda U. Nintendo just needs to make a simple console with the NX.

Editing … I actually appreciate the fact that Nintendo is the only one trying to introduce new ways to play games, that is a HUGE plus for them in my opinion. I just don't think the Gamepad worked. It's not nearly as comfortable to handle as an actual controller, it's touchpad barely changes anything gameplay-wise, and I just find looking back and forth between the TV and the Gamepad screen awkward and unnecessary. With the NX they should make a more traditional console, just so they can stand a chance sales-wise, but when they stop trying to innovate with consoles the industry will suffer alot.

Editing … that isn't really the issue imo. Also because it uses resistive touchscreen and because the controller surface is so wide, it's terribly impractical for games to use it in the first place. It needed to something more like a cross between what it is now and a Vita, in terms of size and shape.
