“If I could go back and hop in a time machine I would’ve done things differently. I think it’s fair to be called out on your shit.

I think that it’s a sad man that can never be self-reflective.

I think that we tried to go and carry ourselves with respect and try to respect sexuality and respect gender as much as we can, and sometimes we fail but hopefully we’ll do better and continue to get better.”

- Steve Jaros, Creative Director at Volition speaking about Anita Sarkeesian’s critique
of the way women are portrayed in #Saints Row 1

Gries He Like I said before, I personally have played Hitman Absolution and everything in this video you're posted is a load of shit. Yes you get "punished" if you go on a murdering spree in this game, but that didn't stop ME from doing it from time to time. It's the same thing with GTA and running over pedestrians with your car, really. The game never encourages to do so, but you still CAN and a lot of people will do that just to test out the boundaries of the game's engine and/or to relieve stress.

Bob GutSmasha What about it though? The main issue that Anita & co. argue is that sexism\misogyny in media has an influential effect on the player. She argues that the more you think you are immune to this, the more it affects you. There are 2 main issues with this. First of all it isn't true: for example, I have played gory games since childhood and I faint in real life if I go hunting or fishing with my uncle, I'm also not violent, I don't rape, I don't drag dead women around, I don't call women bitches\sluts\whores; and I am guessing neither do you. Secondly, Hitman is not exerting an influence over the player, it's one of those choice based games and she dishonestly portrayed it. Why? Buggered if I know, there are plenty of obviously sexist, objectifying games she could have chosen. There is a problem with female portrayal in media, but it's not being honestly addressed by Anita.

Bob GutSmasha Also, it's a side-note but GTA and Hitman are not the same. GTA has always been about hurting civilians and breaking the law, it's a power fantasy. The culture around Hitman was always to aim for clean professional jobs, but how you played it is your own experience. Neither is bad too, there is nothing wrong with murdering civilians in GTA because they aren't real and your brain knows it.
