Admittedly, a lot of hard rockers weren't sure what to think about Vampire Weekend. Their guitar strums and riff styles were light and energetic, with very little distortion. At the same time, their first single was some cross between a punk rock hit and a laid-back South African-style jam. A lot of people called Vampire Weekend a band for preppy college kids.

Still, as long as the music was fresh and eclectic, people would love it. The success of their debut was such a surprise that many pop music fans turned their heads to the indie rock scene. Looking back on this, Vampire Weekend's debut proved that a rock band didn't need heavy publicity to get big.

Editing … It's kind of hard to beat that third album. I just figured that they'd stay in South Africa land, but then they turned to keyboard-ish punk rock and stuff. So I guess they aren't preppies anymore.

Editing … But yeah, I first heard this band on NPR. I thought that they'd sound like some heavy metal band, because their band name had Vampire in it. And then they started playing some light artsy thing. Beh. Oh well.

I've always liked this album. Yet, I've always set it aside. I remember first listening to it and being really into it and then just never listening to it. But, man do I love it. I mean, I really love it. It's the most energetic, youthful, innocent and charming record I've listened to since Franz Ferdinand, giving that record a run for it's money. I'm just filled with so much bliss and energy after every listen. I can't really go in depth with it considering how light and care free it is. Yet, it can still be appreciated due to how it achieves these heights of cheerfulness through fast pacing and playful lyrics without being obnoxious and in your face (most of the time *cough*One*cough*). I feel good giving this record the credit it deserves.
