Editing … Partially. I'm not a rap/hip-hop fan, but I'm determined to listen to the album till the end. But I can't deny that I feel a bit... out of my field with the lyrics and sound.

Editing … You're doing yourself a disservice as a music fan ignoring rap. I'm not saying that you have to love it, but there is a lot that the hip-hop genre can offer. And I'm not sure about you, but the lyrics feel pretty relatable to me.

Editing … Also you do know that the "Every nigga is a star" thing is ironical? It's a surprisingly criticizing album, and it doesn't act like the black community aren't at fault, which I think is a wonderful thing.

Editing … It's not a matter of simply ignore it, it's just that I very very rarely find a song in the genre that I enjoy, and when I do it's generally mixed with other genres, like 7Lions or "Libera Me From Hell".

Editing … Sorry, I came off a little strong there. What I meant is, you should try and experiment, and it's obvious that you do. I also enjoy the fact that To Pimp a Butterfly has a lot of musical influences. It's more than hip-hop.

Editing … Modern Mainstream Hip hop is pretty awful tbh. Dre's new album was rather forgettable, Eminem has been irrelevant for a while now, Kanye is and always will be a hack, Nas just outright sucks nowadays. And I'm not really sure if I'm into this Lamar fella. At all...

To Pimp a Butterfly is perhaps the perfect mix of artistic value and listenability. Both the sounds and the lyrics get deeper and deeper. Intelligent, massive and brilliantly orchestrated, it's no wonder why Lamar is getting all the hype. His technical abilities surpass those of almost everyone else, he is lyrically on an another level, and most importantly, his beats beat the shit out of everyone else.
    Absolutely gorgeous.

This has been said over and over again, but it's so true. This is the most important album of the decade so far. It manages to be so topical and it has so much important and powerful to say, but that doesn't strip it of its passion and grounded, relatable perspective. But, the greatest part is how optimistic and inspirational its presentation of these themes are. On top of that, it's still both boundary pushing and intense on a sonic level, combining elements of jazz and neo-soul with Lamar's trademark sound. This may just be the hype talking, but this is one of the biggest benchmarks in music history since Kid A. Hopefully in a few years, we can see it as a cultural benchmark as well.
