The Swapper is a puzzle-platformer video game for Microsoft Windows. It was developed and published by Facepalm Games, a small independent developer based in Helsinki, Finland. The Swapper was released on May 30, 2013 to near-universal critical acclaim, with reviewers praising the game's visual style and atmosphere, the quality of the puzzles, and the game's ability to innovate on an already well established game mechanic. The Swapper is a side-scrolling puzzle-platform video game. The player controls a person stranded on a damaged space station and looking for means to escape. To do so, they must explore the station and find orbs that are used to activate certain doors, allowing them to progress further into the game. The game uses some concepts of "Metroidvania" games in which the player may have to backtrack through the facility, divided into a number of rooms, to proceed within the game.     The Swapper pulls you in with its haunting atmosphere and enigmatic story that, as it unravels, poses some tough questions, but ultimately leaves it up to you to answer them. Add to that the brilliantly designed puzzles that are highly addicting and you've got yourself something truly special.
    Pros: Few games rival its atmosphere, brilliant and thought provoking story, superb storytelling, great writing and voice acting, ethereal soundtrack, immaculate pacing, genius gameplay mechanic and puzzles, perfect length, respects the player
    Cons: Visuals are serviceable, but nothing more, collectibles further flesh out the story, but are so hidden that you'll actually need a guide to find them, a couple of puzzles that pop up near the end require almost pixel-perfect-like precision

    "The Swapper" is a 2D-puzzle game with a very dark atmosphere and unique art style. As the protagonist you wield the eponymous Swapper device which - when triggered - creates clones of yourself that imitate your every move. And, of course, it also lets you swap bodies with your clones. The puzzles require you to make use of these mechanics in creative ways. Most of them are not too difficult, but there are some tough nuts to crack along the way.

    For me, however, it is in the story department where "The Swapper" really shines. Sure, it raises more questions than it answers, but it's still a thrilling gedanken experiment about the human soul, identity and the significance of extreme isolation from society. The short story that Wells, Lem or Dick never wrote made into a game.
