The Secret of NIMH is a 1982 animated film directed by Don Bluth in his directorial debut. It is an adaptation of Robert C. O'Brien's 1971 children's novel Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. The film was produced by Aurora Pictures and released by United Artists. The film features the voices of Elizabeth Hartman, Dom DeLuise, Arthur Malet, Derek Jacobi, Hermione Baddeley, John Carradine, Peter Strauss, and Paul Shenar. The "Mrs. Frisby" name in the novel had to be changed to "Mrs. Brisby" during production because of a trademark conflict. Released to wide critical acclaim, the film was a moderate box office success. The original was followed in 1998 by a direct-to-video sequel called The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue, which was made without Bluth's input or consent.     Only in the 80s would this movie get a G rating; it's darker than today's PG animated films. It's also pretty damn weird and the animation was all over the place. I think I respected it more than I liked it.

    The Secret of NIMH is probably one of the darkest animated movies out there. It tells the story of a widowed mouse who goes on a journey to protect her children. This makes the film stand out above the simpler Disney movies and gives the film much more emotional as viewers know how dire the main character's situation is. The background designs of The Secret of NIMH are incredible and the whole film demonstrated the tremendous talent and creativity of Don Bluth. However I must mention that most of the most of the side characters are underdeveloped. With such an interesting premise and style it's unfortunate that the side characters fail to meet that same quality. On a similar note, I found that the comic relief crow character to be annoying and he did not move the story forward at all. However, he does help lighten the mood in the scenes that he appears in. Overall, though the movie has its flaws, I really enjoyed it.
