This might have been a masterpiece back then but nowadays this game is pretty terrible. The controls are incredibly clunky and without a guide you are pretty much lost. Plus the difficulty is borderline unfair. Don't bother unless you have a rewind feature so you can look into the future and predict enemy movements. Also there's like three songs in the entire game and it gets on your nerves after a while. Just go and play A Link To The Past.

What an absolute classic. The one that started them all. Even had a cereal and cartoon made after it! Am I the only one who loved the cartoon?

And that Gold cartridge...so beautiful. Can't believe other companies never made similar gimmicks. Where's my silver cartridge?

Although the first Legend of Zelda is one of the hardest games ever made, it is surprisingly enjoyable. Sure, the dialogue looks a little cryptic and the enemies move in extremely erratic patterns. However, the unpredictable challenge still keeps me coming back for more. I just wish that this game had a more satisfying ending. The first Zelda is still a true classic, though.

Legend of Zelda has such a complex, fantastic, yet relatable story... The almost 20 games in the series, while at first seeming unrelated, are all connected with a story that spans the centuries and dimensions, creating a rich history full of grandeur. LEGEND is right.

And not only that - the emotion of each game, the poignant details, make us form a connection to the story. There is such a strong attachment to the land of Hyrule, the story of the fight of good against evil, because WE are in it. WE are Link, and we are in his world - each and every time.

What's best is that everyone can relate to these games. They aren't overly violent or inappropriate. Yet at the same time, there are very mature themes, subtle messages, that give the story such meaning. Both kids and adults - really, people of all ages - can appreciate the fine and detailed (and EPIC) storytelling of the Legend of Zelda.

Fact: I haven't completed many old-school games. Fact: I have beaten this one, and after beating The Legend of Zelda on that hot June afternoon, I realized something that I had previously forgotten about video games over the past few years: Video games are extremely rewarding. When I finally slayed Ganon and was heralded as the hero of Hyrule by the princess herself, I acquired a feeling of accomplishment that I hadn't felt in many years. Ironically, this is the first Zelda game I've ever beaten, and that's weird considering I didn't grow up with the NES Why am I telling you my history with this game and not talking about it? Because you already know what makes the first Zelda so good and so groundbreaking. If you don't, PLAY IT.

Well now, I think this page could use an opinion uninfluenced by nostalgia and retrospective fan hype. The open ended concept and second quest thing is cool. The game set up the basics of the formula used by many of the later games. But that's about it for positives; The original Zelda is repetitive, primitive and lacks atmosphere and focus. Some puzzles are a matter of tedious trial & error, and the dialogue is below criticism. As with Metroid, I don't think the series really took off quality-wise until the SNES game.

The influential start of one of the big game franchises. It hasn't aged as well as the Mario games in terms of graphics or playability, but the sense of exploration for the time was impressive. Hugely innovative in breaking gaming away from the quick quarter-munching designs of the arcades.
