Oblivion taught me everything I needed to know about well-written dialogue. Truth.

Easily the best mainline Elder Scrolls game. Here's some top reasons why I love Oblivion

    > Great Questlines
    > Beautiful graphics (just don't look at the people)
    > Easy to play.
    > Complex yet simple
    > Bloody fantastic music
    > Just good fun.

I find this game really boring. The dungeons are incredibly generic looking. The people are ugly. The level up system is bizarre, nonsensical, and unintuitive. The story is uninteresting. The controls are mediocre and if you're a mage you have to fiddle with them a lot to make them playable. But for some reason I really like the game anyway. It sucks me in and I keep coming back. I can't explain the appeal of this one.

Editing … I don't have any issue with the controls and the game's the opposite of boring but I do agree with you it's very much a game that's more than the sum of its parts.

Editing … "opposite of boring" We find VERY different things boring. I see a generic fantasy setting with swords and emperors and war and my boredom multiplier increases by a factor of 10.

Pros: It is an Elder Scrolls game.
Cons: A very huge list regarding gameplay and content. But nothing mods can't fix.

First intro to the Elder Scrolls series. I still remember how damn lonely I was when trying to talk to the guard who just kept arresting me because I was crouched. That seems awfully racist to midgets.

Oblivion is the game that changed my life more than any other I've experienced before or since. It launched me into my gaming "golden age", and I've easily spent 1,000+ hours playing it - without mods, I might add. In hindsight, I can see the argument for why Skyrim is a better TES game, and maybe if I'd been big into PC RPGs in the early 2000s then Morrowind would be #1 on this list instead, but as things stand Oblivion is the game that most defines me as a person and as a video game enthusiast, and that's why it's #1.

Oblivion was a game that totally, utterly boggled my mind when I first played it. Go anywhere. Do anything. I got sucked into the game like I've never been sucked into anything before. I lost 300 hours to this game, which is the longest I've ever played any single player title for. Skyrim, of course, is as good or maybe even better, but it didn't have the same impact that Oblivion had on me.

An extremely massive RPG, with lots to do and to explore; my kind of game. The story was good, but nothing really extraordinary, I enjoyed more the side quests; the characters were well developed, the dungeons were fun to explore, there was a good enemy variety, good controls and nice scenarios, the visuals are a little poor, but it's understandable; one big problem I had was the inventory itself, I wish they made it a bit more friendly. Final thoughts, an excellent open world RPG, ignoring the technical issues, a fantastic game.

Technically the most accessible edition of Elder Scrolls, based on JJ Slider's unscientific assessment of load times, stupid side quests and amount of time wasted in the gigantic overworld. I still wouldn't call it the greatest game, but it at least reduced the keyboard controls to the essentials for a console controller.
