"Syberia" is a point-n-click adventure about mechanical automatons (robot-like wind-up machines) – and teasingly, about mammoths. With rare but existing weird pronounciation in both, the English and the German version, the heart of this game lies in the impressive achievements of Hans Voralberg, an ingenious savant engineer, who left home in search for a legendary land called Syberia.

The story is quite charming (or the premise, at least), though, its protagonist not too believable: I think Kate Walker makes the (greatly appreciated) personality changes – from obedient to self-confident – for the wrong reasons, resulting in a superficiality based on unhealthy selfishness that I don't like. Every so often she will receive a call on her cell phone from her boss, friend, boyfriend or mother, which stops Kate in her tracks for a few moments, for a dialog sequence. In these dialog scenes she arguably distances herself from these people more and more as the story goes on.

Editing … I was especially angry about Kate (or rather the, I'm assuming, unintentionally misogynistic developers) for one particular puzzle: the dam. It is here where she can't cross a waist-high river – why can't she cross it? Waist-high is not that deep. Afraid of getting a bit wet? Oh well … "Oooh, that stick is too dirty. I won't carry it." … And ultimately the scene where she says: "I can't push the lever, I need help." – and then she goes and gets the boy Momo to do it *for* her instead of *with* her. Ugh … That whole puzzle was just awfully executed, imo.

Editing … All that crap aside however, the overall atmosphere is pretty mellow. You've got many "rooms" with nothing to do but walk through in order to get to the actually (gameplay-wise) interesting places; "rooms" where you can enjoy the chirping birds and nice vistas. Running around and repairing "broken" automatons by simply winding them up again feels kinda mellow, too – not that the puzzles are dull or too easy! It just *feels* mellow because, once wound up, the machines work as intended and "do the work for you". They do *different* work than what you had to do to get them working … *sigh* nevermind.

Editing … I think that the areas explorable from the get-go (in each chapter) are rather vast and can be easily overwhelming, although it's all manageable if you don't rush it. Unfortunately however, the game has many, many clickable doors where all Kate will say is: "I don't need to go there." That's, in this amount, unnecessary and, quite frankly, a bit annoying.

Editing … The context-sensitive GUI can be a bit confusing at first due to icons too hard to distinguish. I wish they had made the speech bubble a filled circle instead of a ring, I feel like that would've helped a lot. Other than that it is a nice fitting simplistic style choice that I can get behind.

Editing … As for the dialog system, the game uses rigid topics to choose from – which, in some conversations, don't make much sense. But it works most of the times. And maybe I'm spoiled by today's games but … the similarly rigid "sequential animation chains" that sometimes occur can be a pain to watch and endure. For instance, Kate walking up a flight of stairs: first center position, then walk cycle, then sometimes popping, finally "release" back to interactivity. Just make sure not to use stairs too often.

Editing … It's a good game, but I don't know if I would recommend playing it without the sequel as an immediate follow-up.

Editing … Err, unless you edit it. Good to know that this wasn't a benevolent bug, but still, believe me: this is safer.
