Super Smash Bros. BrawlVideo Game (2D Fighting)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, known in Japan as Dairantō Smash Brothers X (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX?, lit. "Great Melee Smash Brothers X"), is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series of crossover fighting games, developed by an ad hoc development team consisting of Sora, Game Arts, and staff from other developers, and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console. I only played this for a little while with friends and high school but I had a really good time. It's a nice memory.

For all intents and purposes, Brawl is a good game. It expands on the basic concepts of what made Melee so great while botching some of the deeper mechanics that made Melee better than it should have been. Brawl's biggest problem is how toned down it is. The colors are more muted, the game is slower and it just lacks a draw competitively. It's still fun to play casually but the slower pace of the game makes it a bit more of a drag compared to Melee. The expanded roster and soundtrack are nice additions but other additions like SSE don't work. Subspace Emissary is basically the worst Kirby game. The reworked Target Test is also boring and the trophy selection is less like a museum of Nintendo and more like a commercial for Donkey Kong Barrel Blast. SSBB feels less like a heartfelt love letter and more like a Hallmark card. It's shallow and without the heart but it still functions. And even a functioning Smash Bros. game is still really, really good.

The sole reason Brawl is in my list is because of Project M. If P:M didn't exist at all, Bawls wouldn't be here.

I had rocket-high expectations for this game and it definitely delivered. I was a huge fan of the series and played all of the games and Super Smash Bros. Brawl has to be my favorite. Though I prefer Melee in terms of gameplay, Brawl has much more content, a better single player mode, and the best selection of characters. Super Smash Bros. is a blast to play with your friends and anyone who has a Wii has to play this game.

This is very hard for me to review. When Brawl came out, everyone went crazy for it, but now that the hype's died down it's been looked at more negatively. The same applies to me. The items and stages just got too wacky in this version of Smash, and detract from the experience rather than improve it. Subspace Emissary is a waste of 8 hours, and I don't like the slower gameplay as much as that of Melee's and Smash 64's, plus the characters don't move fluidly, destroying the sense of immersion. The modes are also not as good since target test is the same for every character, same with all-star and classic mode, but I liked the stage builder. It can still be fun, but don't expect a classic.

Score: 6.5 (Not bad!)

Maybe not as good as Melee. It's still a blast to Play, and thanks to Online Play, The Hours of Play Time will be drastically increased!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Smash Bros. installment for the Nintendo Wii, features outstanding graphics, a big character roster and a story mode designed for 1 or 2 players. The greatest improvement over the previous installments is the online mode, though the online features are limited and there are some delays and desyncs, but it works well enough. The soundtrack is great! With a wide range of different control schemes and handicap options, both beginners and pros can join the fun! The stages are very well designed as well as all of the different and unique items. Solid Snake and Sonic are good additions to the roster.

I will never, ever forget Sakurai's marvelous contributions to the world. As we should all know, he once summed it up in a single sentence on a particular Dojo post: "Wow, we really have thought of everything, haven't we?" Yes. Yes, sir, you have. From the very first post on that site all the way to my most recent hours with Brawl, there has always been a continuous feeling of being overwhelmed by the amount of quality content and genuine effort by the greatest of revered contributors from all across the known land. No matter how you feel about the core game, the work put into the project is undeniably a marvel of its own.
