- Super Metroid (11h, 3.5/5)

I played this game for the first time exactly one year ago, got about halfway through but then my save file got deleted somehow. Had I finished it then I wouldn't have ranked it higher than a 2 out of 5.

It was my opinion back then that the game relied too much on backtracking, the boss fights were way too hard and I absolutely despised that I never had any clue where to go next or what to do exactly.

Now one year later I wanted to play something on pc for a few minutes before I went to bed: four hours later I had already completed 60% of the game without using a guide and that's when it clicked.

Over the next three days I beat the whole game and it's now one of my favorite SNES games of all time. I stand corrected.

In the lower right corner of Norfair there's this huge lava pit which you have to get through so you can progress to the next boss. I already got the Varia suit, so I don't get hurt by the lava anymore. Unfortunately Samus can't simply swim through it, you have to spin while you're jumping apparantly. How do you do that?!

Rockshard PhD If there's something you don't know how to do, typically it means you haven't acquired that ability yet. (Walljump is an exception, but it is not needed to progress, and the game teaches you about it eventually.)

Gries He but what ability are we talking about here? after googling for half an hour I found out that you get the screw attack after beating ridley in lower norfair. is this the item I need to make my way through this huge lava pit or is it sth else? I somehow have to spin my way up there while I'm swimming through the Lava. that trick is even shown during the opening cutscene before you start the game

Rockshard PhD I wasn't sure what ability you are talking about, it sounds like space jump, but whatever it is, you haven't acquired it yet or else you would know what it is and when to use it. So I'm guessing you tried to do that room prematurely.

Firion Hope yeah it would be screw attack, thats the ability that lets you spin jump an infinite amount of times

Gries He thanks for helping me out here, guys. reading walkthroughs of this game online is super confusing, it's all like "go into this room, shoot at this enemy, turn left, do a spin, equip bombs, go through that tunnel, open that green door, DO A BARREL ROLL etc pp"

Does anyone know how to get through the quicksand room in Maridia? You have to jump on pink pipes, but the sand that is falling from the roof prevents you from doing so.
Super Metroid

Rockshard PhD im not sure i remember. but did you try falling through the quicksand

Gries He yes, but that's not it. Maybe I need to visit the ship wreck first, apparently you get a gravity suit once you defeat the boss of that area

PedroJensen If you have the Screwattack, you can swirl right through. But I believe you don't have that yet the first time you're there. I believe the answer you need is this: you need to be stubborn at jumping. Press A down hard (or whatever the jump button is). And keep trying, you won't succeed the first time around.

Magus Magus You should get the Gravity Suit first, yes.

Gries He http://www.ehow.com/how_6657631_boss-maridia.html I’m trying to reach Maridia’s mini boss “Botwoon”, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get there. Where exactly do I have to do a wall jump ?

Gries He cheers, that's exactly it! thanks man! right before that miniboss there's a dead end, turns out you have to speed-boost through a wall. I'm trying that out once I get home amazing game so far

Why can't Metroid wall jump ?

Rockshard PhD you can wall jump actually

Gries He she sucks at it though, took me half an hour to pull it off. thank god for quicksaves

Aramonde Also it should be "Why can't Samus wall jump"

PedroJensen It should actually be: "Why can't The Legend of Samus: Kraid's Awakening wall jump ?" ;^p

Alianger well you can skip some stuff by doing it, so I think they made it that way on purpose to make it feel like more of an accomplishment when you pull it off and find a new route

I hate being stuck in a game...

Gries He same here. I played it last year for the first time ever for about 4 hours but then my savefile got deleted.

Mayar Karkout I played it on my phone "play time: 1:36"; still have the save file but seriously stuck in the beginning of "Norfair". If anyone has a tip...?

nodley I have a tip for you - Don't play rubbish games!

Gries He Metroid 3 is not a rubbish game, it's just that Nintendo has and always will suck at player guidance

Mayar Karkout OH MY, HOW IDIOTIC OF ME. I had discovered the way before but totally forgotten about it! The months' wait finally comes to an end.

Greatest game of all time. A masterpiece from beginning to end and in every single aspect of the game. Oozes an oppressive atmosphere, invoking the fear of the unknown, but giving the player every tool needed to overcome it one at a time. Also one of the last great games to allow complete freedom of play within its sandbox world, instead of locking down gameplay in favor of unnecessary cinematic exposition.

Imagine a gaming world dominated by non-atmospheric insta-fun titles – and then *this* comes out!

"SM" is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure with item-based progression that bears no hand-holding whatsoever – which is SUPERBLY AWESOME. If you don't know how to explore a control scheme (and refuse to learn it), you're gonna be utterly lost. As one game of the eponymous metroidvania genre, players find themselves in front of closed doors that open based on *their* individual progress.

Smart game design: you constantly find something new to learn which, as a result, changes the game, even in the later "levels". Also, there are a handful of unique moments – where you *really* have to think outside the box.

Iconic music: especially Maridia's theme really stands out to me in how dark and moving it is.

Unfortunately, the map doesn't mark which items you already got, only those that you discovered; an extreme nuisance for the 1oo% score. But that doesn't lessen the overall experience.

Super Metroid is brilliantly designed and is a lot of fun. Even though I have only played this game for the first time recently, I can safely say that it is one of the best games of all time. The great atmosphere and flawless gameplay makes this game one to be remembered.

I started playing Super Metroid tonight, downloaded off the Wii U Virtual Console for $0.30. VERY worth it; I don't have a SNES controller to plug into my computer, and playing it on a keyboard is basically impossible... I couldn't even get past the first escape on the emulator version. Now they need to hurry up and release Earthbound!

PedroJensen ¢3o, what a steal! The game's easily worth $5, even today.

Throw yourself in an isolated open-world 2D sidescrolling corridor, add amazing music, freaky space imagery and you have the excellence that is Super Metroid. This has to be one of the greatest games ever made. Going whereever you want to go as long as you could access it, doing speedruns if you dare tried to complete the game faster, the feeling of being alone and lost in a deserted area. Spending so many hours trying to find everything there is to find, finding shortcuts, warp points, trying a different direction if one direction seems too hard at the time. No one should go without playing this game, it's pretty much a requisite.

My favorite game by far. Super Metroid is an excellently crafted experience in every way with its varied environments to explore, big and intimidating bosses, immersive atmosphere, and an excellent soundtrack to back it up. Akll these a long with its relatively simple yet satisfying story that is masterfully told with no words puts this game at the top of my list.

Super Metroid showed that an adventure platformer could truly become a work of art. The no-dialogue storyline may seem archaic, but the entire environment is incredibly diverse. Super Metroid's ambient soundtrack has that mysterious, unsettling vibe that keeps people exploring. Every map contained hidden treasures that everyone just had to find. This game is amazing.

The level design in Super Metroid is fantastically elaborate - occasionally it's too elaborate for it's own good (with a couple of places to render the player stuck), but most of the time it provides memorable gameplay with opportunities for branching paths. One of the game's most impressive design choices is the superb enemy placement, where each creature is placed specifically to help test your weapons or reveal a hidden path. Each upgrade feels satisfying (as the player can notice the clear advantage it brings) and the new mechanics that are slowly introduced always make sure to reward the player with new content and ways of easily bypassing previously tough areas. Evolving music and aesthetics make the game very atmospheric.

I don't think I can say much about Super Metroid that hasn't already been said. The music, mood, exploration, action elements and understated story are all top notch. Super Metroid didn't really to too much new beyond its predecessors, but it did a beautiful job of polishing the elements of those earlier games to a crystal shine.

I may haven't played it when it was a blast but when I had the chance to play it in the Wii's virtual console, I loved it; it's the best of the best from the old school, this may come because I like Metroid in general, but its a true and undeniable fact that this game is a force to be recognized with, an outstanding video game.

Sheer perfection. Every new playthrough is a fresh, enjoyable experience. I love the isolation of the game, and the way the soundtrack sets the mood. It truly feels like Samus is just all alone, and the game is one gigantic maze. I believe this game also set the precedant for Speed Running.
