The first RPG take on Mario, developed by Square with supervision by Miyamoto. It uses an isometric perspective and Mario needs to run around and jump to navigate the world. Enemies are all visible instead of random and coming into contact with them triggers battle. Unlike many games with similar encounters, there's no surprise attack or first strike system. The game innovated the timed-hits battle system that future Mario RPGs and many other games would draw from. It has a unique art style with great animation and music. The characters and world are pretty amusing and the dialogue is funny. There's a good selection of minigames to play and hidden things to find. It doesn't wear out its welcome either, as the game probably takes around 20 hours or less to complete your first time through. The only real problem is that the game is too easy, laughably so if you know what you're doing and abuse the tools you're given. It has more than enough charm to compensate for that, though.

It's amazing how well they pulled this off. The story is original and funny, the characters are interesting, the atmosphere is great, and the battle system was one of the most innovative in an RPG at the time. It really raised the bar on what I expect out of an RPG, and I haven't seen anything else quite match it.
