While the original Mario Land is notable for its different take on the formula, it was the sequel that planted the Mario franchise as just as good on the good ol' Game Boy as on a home console. With a design choice that mixed Mario World with the core Mega Man series, players had the option to make their own plan of attack by choosing what stage they would venture to next. Unlike the first Mario Land, Mario was instantly recognizable as his SNES counterpart, rather than a collection of pixels to resemble his iteration from the very first installment in the Super Mario Bros. trilogy. Top off the quest with the introduction of the dastardly Wario and a damn good soundtrack, and you've got one of the best portable platformers ever.

Don't get me wrong; this was an awesome feat for a GB game back then but I don't find it all that satisfying to play any more, due in part to the slow pace and low challenge level. These problems just weren't as noticeable when playing on the original hardware.

Super Mario Land 2 features many improvements over the predecessor. The graphics have been improved in every way with better backgrounds, bigger and more detailed characters and enemies and a big world map. The player can choose his or her own way on the map but overall 6 coins must be collected to defeat Wario who took over Mario's castle. The soundtrack is great and the levels are very diverse. There are also new power-ups like the carrot which transforms Mario into Rabbit Mario. Super Mario Land 2 is kind of a milestone because it marked the debut of Wario, Mario's infamous antagonist.

My first video game to call my own. :) Unlike the original SML, 6 Golden Coins is an uncompromised Mario outing, and a good one to boot. Nothing too original but masterful 2D platforming you expect from Mario all the same that takes advantage of the Gameboy's hardware. It also introduced Wario to the Mario universe.

This game has got fantastic level design and is rather unique for a Mario game. It has a world map letting you go to any area you want off the bat, and just feels..different from a regular Mario game, and very quirky at times. It's short but highly replayable - exactly what someone should expect from a 20 year old Game Boy game. I'd definitely recommend it to any Mario fan or anyone off the 3DS e-Shop where it's only $3.99.
