Super Mario Bros 2, or The Lost Levels, is a very disappointing game. Not because it's a bad game, it's pretty good actually, but it's basically what you would expect from a very good hack rom. While Nintendo tends to re-invent themselves with new games (see Zelda 2), Super Mario Bros. 2 takes the easy path and just adds an insane difficult to the original Super Mario Bros., removing the two-player mode (why would someone do that?) and giving the players a questionable level design. The game wasn't release in the western market because it was too hard for us, and it was, but I'm sure nobody missed it with the super amazing Super Mario Bros. USA, or Doki Doki Panic.

Apart from a few mindfucks here and there (seemed like the devs just wanted to piss you off with some design choices), this is a good sequel which delves into the less obvious mechanics of the SMB engine, really expecting the player to know its quirks. Still, the barely noticeable audiovisual upgrade is a bit disappointing even for such an old game.

Yeah, it's pretty much the original Super Mario Bros., just harder, but that's what I like about it: rather than most Mario games, this game actually gives you a challenge, and a fair one at that. Overall, better than the original, and if unikgamer allowed for more slots on the Favorite Games list, this'd be Number 26.
