My favorite Star Wars movie. A lot of people say Empire is better but I'd say they're equal, because each one tells a different kind of story. A New Hope has a a more classic plot that's executed perfectly, with the Death Star battle being one of the best action scenes in all of cinema, while Empire excels at telling each character's individual story well.

Here's a short plot summary that shows how similar A New Hope and Force Awakens truly are:

Woodrow Shigeru In this particular instance I prefer the successful near-copy over a simply bullshit movie.

    Wow
this was somehow even better than I remembered
one of the greatest movies of all time
how did you do it, Lucas?

The prequels all look like absolute shit compared to this movie. It makes me furious that they even exist.

msg . The thing about the original trilogy is the lightsaber duels. Worst fight scenes in the history of films!

Husky Wing oh yes, those fights with Count Dooku were just *great* weren't they

msg . I got told the reason Vader never moves his arms is because the suit wouldn't allow much movement. Dunno how true that is.

The second worst movie in the whole saga.

I'd rather watch droidikas blow shit up than having to endure another half hour of some farm boy fucking around on a desert planet.

Ryan Thorp I'd rather watch a half hour of "some farm boy fucking around on a desert planet" then another 10sec of Anakin & Padme trying to convince me that the love they have for each other is super duper genuine and that their chemistry really isn't that of just two chairs stacked on top of each other.

Gries He There's just so much going on on-screen in the prequels, it's great.

free fall A New Hope is the best movie in the series. The beginning scenes on Tattooine provide emotional context for Luke's character and the rest of the movie. It's the only one where they bother establishing the characters' motivations.

Alright, so here begins what will be my long-winded opinion's of each Star Wars film, starting where it all began in 1977 with Star Wars. Now this probably won't be all that long-winded because really what more can I add that hasn't already been stated? This is flat out an incredible film experience, a groundbreaking & revolutionary film for its time. It set a new highpoint for visuals that wasn't really topped until Blade Runner came around in `82. But the most significant achievement Star Wars was establishing the idea of the Summer Blockbuster, the notion of big budget spectacles for the sake of profits. For better or worse Star Wars basically created the Summer Blockbuster genre, a genre I must admit I loathe yet understand why it exists. Because above all else Star Wars showed one thing, just how fun and imaginative the medium can be. The landscape of `70's American cinema is marked with many profound dramatic films that I personally believe that are some of the best films ever made. Star Wars isn't a film that would fall into that sort of category and it doesn't have to because it's great for what it is - a rousing adventure tale. Now does that mean doesn't have any faults? Absolutely not because it does have have them. The most apparent one is the dialogue, it's incredibly cheesy and at times incredibly cringe-worthy. Ford was right when he said that people don't talk like this because they damn well don't, but I cannot deny that there is a sort of charm to it all. Effects at times don't look all that great either. The fixing of Greedo shooting first in post looks absolutely ridiculous, but this is the late `70s and it seems a bit unfair to judge it harshly on that. And if I wanted I can go on pocking holes & pointing out things that don't quite make much sense at all but that doesn't feel right to me. The suspension of disbelief - the general idea of forgiving the impossible & the illogical parts of a story - is something I believe implies to something like Star Wars. There is just to much fun to be had with this that being cynical here feels wrong. And that's what best sums up Star Wars to me. It is a really really really fun ride that I can jump on at any time and know that I'm in for a great time.

Husky Wing I have the theatrical editions in mkv form on my old computer. I could set that old piece of shit up and give them to you if you need it (they were available on DVD in 2006, but in pretty poor quality, not even widescreen)

The film that started the massive franchise, this film sets the universe up. Showing us the characters we will soon have fun with, the worlds that will be explored, and the danger our heroes will face. The film has a fantastic and iconic opening, followed by a slow first act, but picks back up afterwards and keeps it through the end. A great film that was perfect for starting a beloved franchise.

Second or third time I watch Star Wars, and Ulty is right. I thought I could give a better score than this but I'm sorry, the scenario is for a big part, a mess, the lightsaber fight (Obi-Wan Vs. Vador) is getting nowhere (and this disappearance...really?), the 20 minutes at the beginning for R2 and C-3PO are slow and uninteresting and the "someday you'll understand the force" and a few hours or days after the character is already a hero who shots straight in the middle of the target...nope. And still, the special effects are good, would've been between average and bad movie without this.

    Score: 6.5 (Not bad!)

Sha Ember ...No, never. I like every Jedi more than a Sith, and Darth Vader is one of my least favorite Sith because I don't like his performance and style. Plus, I think the most interesting part of the character is actually depicted in the Episodes I-III. I side with the people telling Vader and Anakin are two different characters, Anakin is in a Favslist as my favorite Star Wars character and Vader isn't because he is not one of my favorites, however he could've been. If I read comics, I would be more interested by what he did as a Jedi rather than his Sith persona. Sure, I don't understand his motives, but I don't mind, from what I've seen by now he is just a freak who likes to strangle his allies.

Ulty I get why so many people love this series. At the time there was just nothing like it, it lit people's imaginations in a time where cinema was riddled with realistic and depressive movies. And I get that, but to me the film is really nothing special. Everything is so basic, nothing about this story and it's characters was interesting.

Sir larosenin That's just ridiculous, Episode IV is like the perfect movie while Episode 1 is a mess! The podrace is good, the final battle is good, Anakin is awful (he was even more in Ep2) Jar Jar is just so bad no word can describe it and Darth Maul is a wasted potential. I could go on and on about all the movies since I've seen them all too many times to know how many but man... if I didn't know better I would think you're joking. Oh and Ep3 is not bad, witch is a miracle if you look at his two predecessors, but certainly not better than any movie of the first trilogy.

Splatterhouse 5 When I first read this, I instantly thought of that part in "Scanners" when the head blows up, and then I read the rest, and a calmness overcame, and I sighed a sigh of relief. Everything's going to be ok.

Richard Pale I didn't see it until I was 17 or so. Wasn't really amazed, I think it's a series that's meant to be your introduction to sci-fi whereas I'd seen a lot of other sci-fi by that point.
