I was really hesitant about this game before getting it. I liked the first one because it was the ultimate Sega fanservice game (Ryo Hazuki & the Bonanza Bros?) and a solid kart racer. This one didn't have nearly as much fanservice and added in two weird gimmicky styles of play. I wasn't really looking forward to it to be honest. But I'm glad I got it because it's one of the best kart racers in a long time. The tracks are excellently designed and the character roster, while not quite as great, is still solid. The unlock system is stupid and it's got some rough edges but it's another incredible racing game by Sumo Digital. The only way it could get better is if the added Ryo in as DLC. It's not impossible!

    Yeah it is.

For kart racers, nothing tops this game. There are many characters, vehicle mods, tracks, stickers, etc. to unlock; a fun and eclectic roster of characters from SEGA's classic franchises; a variety of single-player modes, game types and missions. The tracks are varied and well designed, "transforming" over the course of the race, and are full of different paths and shortcuts. I wasn't a "SEGA kid" growing up, but even for me this game oozes nostalgia and has a lot of heart. Good job, SEGA. One gripe though: fairly buggy online.
