Ya know what? This Firaxis game is old. I like it, though. And now, whenever I think of Firaxis, I think of this freaking game. XCOM: Enemy Unknown? More like Alpha Centauri: Enemy Unknown. Or...not really.

Long before they made XCOM, Firaxis developed Alpha Centauri. It's like Civilation, except with very cool sci-fi upgrades. Sure, it's almost as old as the very first Civilization game, but it still has a cyber-punk-ish vibe. If mankind ever colonized another planet, then the scramble for resources would probably look as ruthless as this game.

No one ever explains exactly what a nerve stapling is. It is understood to be some form of brute medical imposition, an outrage that is felt but never seen, a thing so shameful and necessary that those who bluster its defense do so with averted eyes and violent fanaticism. How else could it be? It must be done. Of this we all admit, even we who do not admit it and abhor the revolting procedure and its fascist, terrifying finality. It must be done.

Are we to allow the drones their unrestrained impulses, their base and inhuman lack of self control? They will puncture the walls. In their stupidity and selfishness they will breach the membranes that protect us from Planet and its air, its toxic gases and hostile life forms. The worms are out there and they want us, want to feed on our dreams and carcasses, to lay eggs in putrid masses and use us to feed their larvae. We cannot risk the continuity of our physical existence on account of these undeserving, out of control savages.

They are changed afterwards, in all the ways we know they must be. They shuffle, speak slowly, and look at us with unfocused slowness. We are grateful for the order that comes with the newly stapled but deep within us we still sense their anger and fear their suppressed resentment. We fear that one day it will erupt and that even in their dazed, smothered imbecility they will see us for the tyrants we are and so give us what we deserve.

I am for the staplings. They are indefensible, unacceptable, barbaric acts of basest expedience. No society, no matter how great its need, can admit of so nakedly inappropriate an abuse of power. Official force must be circumscribed, its application limited to clearly defined scenarios and justifiable limits. There can be no justification for these things we do.

Yet there were are. It must be done.

This game is responsible for at least one ruined relationship. Jokes aside, this probably IS responsible for a marked reduction of my social life in '99. House party? NO WAY, MAN! I GOT SMAC! The club can't even HANDLE me right now, I GOT SMAC! Either way, this game took everything that was great about Civ II, recreated much of it in an immersive alien world, with realistic factions based by philosophy, rather than nationality, a creeping alien world and that sweet, sweet "just one more click" gameplay. Definitely worthy of the title "classic," and still playable and ENJOYABLE today.

The holy grail of Sid Meier's 4X endeavors. A sort of an evolution of Civlization series. That ended up being one of the most iconic games of its time. The amount of research, political establishments, pre-build units is just overwhelming and then I started to dig deeper and find out what a beast Alpha Centauri is. One of the most fun and smartest time sinks around.

Beyond the doubt the best Sid Meier's game of all time. Interesting factions, fantastic technologies, mysterious back story. This is more than a worthy successor of Civilization II, it is a revolutionary game playable even today. With Civilization V, Firaxis is trying a different route (and very succesfully). I can only hope they will attempt to revisit Alpha Centauri as well at some point in the future.

I have no idea what I'm doing, the game basically plays itself.
