This is pretty much me during a boss battle in this game:

Editing … In the wake of all this SMTV hype I've had to ask myself, well why not play SMTIV, or why haven't I. So I looked the game up and find that it's first person. =/ And 2D at that. Meh.

Editing … It wasn't completely first-person--the dungeon exploring sections were all in third-person. So the series kept some semblance of 3D exploration, But there were a lot of trade-offs when ATLUS moved it to the 3DS. And yeah, 2D sprites.

Editing … SMT3 had Dante, though. I don't really know why, but they put Dante in the Maniax edition. And all that stuff was in third-person 3D. That was cool. I wish I'd figured out how to recruit him. https://youtu.be/CyKAgXbEX3A

As semi-disappointing as the fourth SMT turned out, the boss music is some of the best that I've ever heard. From any RPG. I want to give this game away, but when I listen to the miniboss music, I'm just like, "Hell yeah, mofos."

Wow, majorly disappointing. A still frame game on a 3D console.... and the gameplay is shit too.

Editing … Everyone had mixed opinions about it, because the game takes a long time to really get interesting. I still liked it, but yeah, a lot of the areas are very tedious. Not even Megami Tensei-level tedium--there's just a lot of frustrating sections with hidden areas where the player has to figure out to jump.

Editing … The characters are the worst, though. There's goody-two-shoes Jonathan and bratty spiky-haired Walter. I wonder which one ends up good or evil? And then there's that Isabeau girl who's supposed to represent "neutral," but she ends up being the dullard. And that sounds even more dumb when I say it out loud.

Editing … I keep thinking that this was originally a PS2 game, but no. It's a 3DS exclusive. The upcoming Switch sequel already looks like a vast improvement over the still-frame animation of SMT 4.

Editing … Yeah. I still don't understand why they bothered making this 3D world when the character's look so static. A lot of people had issues with that. Anyways, they didn't improve anything in the Apocalypse sequel. It looks like some lame filler material.

Probably one of my favorite "Continue" screens in a video game.
Charon: "Soul of the deceased youth, welcome to the river Styx."
(Looks up at the main character, rolls eyes)
    Charon: "Oh, it's you again."

Someone called this the Dark Souls of JRPGs? It's more like this--I started as a samurai with some smartphone gauntlet. I ventured beneath Mikado to find Tokyo in...the underworld. And I also got to meet with Stephen (Hawking?) and I fought to save Japan from demons...or something. It's a great, hardcore, turn-based affair. However, it's very...different. And unusual. But hey, at least I didn't have to fight against Hitler this time.

Although SMT 4 can grow very repetitious, the graphics and the art looks fantastic. The entire game world is so massive that it takes over 200 hours just to find every quest and item. The simple good-vs-evil dynamic of the story is somewhat disappointing, but Atlus added in enough content to keep fans busy for months.

Shin Megami Tensei IV has great gameplay (think Pokemon but harder), an amazing soundtrack, and a great narrative. The game isn't character focused, so don't expect a lot of super wacky characters to hang out in like the Persona series. SMT IV is dark, lonely, and wonderful! Please pick this game up!

Holy balls... if you have a 3DS and like JRPGs get this right now; it's on sale too. I'm just in the tutorial area and it has handed me my ass over and over... it's like the Dark Souls of turn based RPGs... the music and art are fantastic too, it's crazy :3

Editing … I'm playing Persona 4 at the moment; that's really good too but in a different area. SMT IV... the enemies are on their own nuts: in the first hour I had all my possessions stolen, tricked by a Gumbi impersonator into giving all my HP away, and had to bribe the spirit of the dead in order to avoid the game over screen which has now left me bankrupt and owing 300 bucks... what the hell am I playing? I tried reasoning with a mole thing that was busting to go to the toilet, I even offered to go for it... and there was no reasoning with it! Everything I said offended the bloody thing!

Nearly everything one could desire from a Shin Megami Tensei game. Story, mythos, world, exploration, battles, customization, graphics, and sound are top tier. The only thing holding this game back from the top tiers of RPG stardom is that some of the characters are not as well developed as they could be. But even then, it is clear that this was an intentional decision. This game is about story concepts larger than characters and the immense wealth of gameplay, not a few individuals' arcs like in many RPG's.
