Normally when a musician bases their music around something already existing like a game series I don't catch onto it much since I know the music they're making isn't entirely original, especially with something like Touhou since I don't know much about the series (I've played a few of the games and liked them but the the fanbase doesn't seem to regard the actual games much), but Shibayan's nu-disco/electronic stuff is just the best kind of tits. Shit's amazing. I don't care that the melodies I love from his stuff probably come from Touhou, what he does with it is crazy good. I never had much affinity for the 80s sound before getting into Shibayan either but his albums with that sound made me fall in love with it, now I love cheesy 80s synth music. I'm not into his J-pop-sounding or bossa nova stuff personally but the stuff he does that I do like I can listen to all day. His songs also tend to be really long so each song of an album feels almost like a 'chapter' and when a song finishes and goes to the next you're moving on to the next 'chapter' of the album. I dunno if I'm explaining what I mean well but I love it anyway. Somehow despite them being so long they never ever feel like they're dragging either, they feel like the perfect length.
