Atrocious game design from the ~~mid 90's~~ (I stand corrected: mid noughties, actually; feels like mid 90's). Dated graphics with lots of interesting brown tones. Unrelatable summer camp backdrop. Annoying children in the focus. Horrible controls in the default Steam controller config (which admittedly is not the game's fault). Laggy animations (which could maybe stem from a too slow laptop, and therefore admittedly is not the game's fault either). Overwhelming amount of immersion breaking popups. Early militarism of young innocent minds. Boring and too many cutscenes.

I understand that a lot of people love it but … it's just not for me.

2/10 — Let's uninstall and play something else.

I still haven't finished this. It's like Banjo-Kazooie meets...Day of the Tentacle? I mean, a lot of Tim Schafer's games end up crossing styles with Day of the Tentacle. And that's cool.

This is the kind of imagination and creativity that I wish Nintendo would finally start to employ in their platformers (sorry, but they're so predictable that I can sleepwalk through them). The setting, the dreamscapes, the characters, and the humor all wonderfully blend together to make the most memorable platformer I've ever played; making this a classic in my book.

Nintendo can learn a thing or two from Tim Schaffer on how to create a platformer that is more than just the sum of it's parts.

"Warning: the abandoned mental institution across the lake is not Psychonaut's property and not safe for children. Access has been blocked off, but please - for your own safety, children - do not find another route. Love, Mia." - #Silent Hill reference in Psychonauts

... Could someone pls tell me why exactly this game got away with a T rating? It's like a Silent Hill Jr in that it deals with some very, very mature themes.

In one level you're in a club, loud music is playing in the background and there's this hidden room (which is actually a part of Milla's subconsciousness).

Milla tells you to stay away from it, she wants to party on and forget about what happened to her. If you go in anyway, you'll see some weird, burning puppets á la #Papo & Yo which are basically a metaphor for her kids she lost to the fire when her house burned down :

"Help us Milla. Why did you let us die? We're all alone now, Milla. Where are you? It's hot. It's burning. Why don't you help us, Milla?!"

    That's fucked up.

Although Psychonauts is a little tricky to figure out, the whole environment is brilliant. It feels like a living, breathing world full of wacky jokes. Although it works well as a platformer, the game does a better job at immersing people into an artistic, demented universe. The creator, Tim Schafer, did an amazing job. He helped make one of the most unique landscapes for people to roam freely in.

"Psychonauts" is an awesome 3D platformer brimming with brilliant ideas and a droll sense of humour. As Razputin, boy wonder and soon-to-be psychic secret agent, you enter the minds of other people to - quite literally - fight their inner demons, remove mental cobwebs and sort out emotional baggage. It is the perfect excuse for any outlandish and fantastic level designs, and the game exploits this situation to its full potential. Not to mention the witty script, charming characters and countless little jokes. This game is a true gem.

Psychonauts is full of original and imaginative ideas, and for the most part, the execution of these ideas is done fantastically. Probably the game's biggest attraction is its sense of humour - the characters, the world and the plot are all really funny and brought to life by great writing. While the gameplay mechanics are pretty similar throughout (adding in a few new abilities as you progress), the design of each level differs substantially, adding variety and keeping the game engaging. Psychonauts' biggest flaws would have to be its appallingly designed final level (a really poor way to end the game), and the basic mechanics feeling a bit clunky. When looked at as a whole however, the game is a novel and entertaining experience.
