So I just picked up the Game Gear version of this game on a whim the other day, and I have to say it's actually pretty interesting. It's originally from before action platformers were really established, and it seemed to be trying for different things than what became the norms for the genre. For instance, it's weird about health. You get a generous health bar, and nothing can kill you in one hit or anything (you lose health as you touch things like spikes, so if you jump out as soon as you hit one, it won't do that much), but the health bar doesn't get refilled after you beat a stage, and while there are unlimited continues, there aren't any extra lives, and continuing brings you back to the beginning of the level with exactly the same health you had when you first started it. Health items also get pretty scarce as you get into the game, but you do get a temporary invincibility power that gets upgraded as you go along, and it seems that they intended you to use that a lot. So a lot of the late game is trying to figure out whether it's worth using your MP on it or if you can just tough out a room. It's actually an interesting sort of choice that I haven't seen in other games.

Aside from that, the main gimmick with your attacks is that you get elemental powers, which each hurt certain types of enemies different amounts and can be used to interact with the stages at times. For instance, in one level, there are sections where you can freeze water to create platforms or use your fire abilities to destroy them, so you have to use that to create stairs and bridges to cross. Movement is a little weird, as your character will suddenly pick up speed if you run long enough. It's a little jarring at first, but you only really encounter it in big open areas, and you learn when it's going to happen pretty quickly. The level design isn't that complex, nor are the bosses (the levels in fact reminded me of another forgotten earlier action platformer, Layla for the Famicom), but they do the job well enough.

So this probably isn't going to be too many people's favorite game, I would say it's just good enough to be a hidden gem on the Game Gear. Give it a shot if you like 8-bit platformers and want to try something that's a bit different.
