As someone who can't go back and enjoy the original show, I was pleasantly surprised. The animation and voice acting are a lot better than I would have expected. At only an hour and a half, the story moves really swiftly, hitting only the major beats while still managing to feel like a big epic journey. Although it has the cheesiness one would expect, I never cringed, and it was quite nostalgic. The darkness and feels of the second episode surprised me. I just wish Red were a more interesting character, and another half hour would have fleshed things out better. For what it was, it was a lot better than it had any right to be.

It was a nice window into what could be. I would love to see a full series in this style with a proper plot.

This was basically a fun little bit of pandering for the older fans and nothing more.

I was actually very hyped for this special, since the anime is an ungodly monstrocity that begs for apocalipse. Finally, something that can actually respect the source material!

...it doesn't. I mean yes, alot of it follows the games pretty well while at the same time doing some slight and intelligent changes, but the inner fanboy in me was still nitpicking all the way through. Red isn't nearly as good as I hoped he would be, which turned me off quite a bit on this one. But the worst offender is that half-assed, deus ex-machina piece of shit ending that can die and burn in hell for all I care!

With the positives and negatives, I really stuggle to decide if I liked it or not. I guess it was entertaining, and if you aren't that fanboyish like I am you'll mostly love it. I'd recommend it, what you read here was an opinion coming from an obsessive compulsive asshole.

I love how this mini-series makes clever references throughout to specific moments and dialogue from the game (such as the woman in Lavender Town who points out the "white hand" on Red's shoulder when he says he doesn't believe in ghosts). But with the entire game's events crammed into 4 episodes, the sense of scale and accomplishment as one progresses through the games is lost. Any struggles Red faces are short-lived, making his character something of a "Mary Sue," and despite the OVA's targeting an older audience, it still relentlessly crams the "believe in your Pokemon and you can do anything" dogma down the viewers' throats. It's just an okay nod to the original games, and an interesting peek at what the full-length Pokemon anime series could have been.

I actually went back and rewatched the first season of Pokemon earlier this year, so it'll fun watching this as well and comparing the two. It's gonna be weird seeing all these characters from the original show, but have them all be... slightly different. I imagine Brock and Misty won't join Red on his quest. Jessie, James and Meowth probably don't even exist... Anyway, you excited about this, @Louis Bromilow?
