Tetris may have been the milk the Game Boy was nursed with, but Pokemon was the meat that fed its appetite for half a decade. And as nostalgic as I am to earlier games, it is hard to deny that the second generation is the definitive RPG title of handheld gaming history, with Crystal being the most complete version. Game Freak is sometimes criticized for not moving beyond these roots quickly enough, but growing beyond something like Pokemon Crystal is something few can accomplish.

In a sense, Pokémon Crystal was the first "video game" I ever played (I'd played "computer games" before, but those were another beast entirely). While later games in the series have definitely refined the mechanics of Crystal, there's a strong sense of calming nostalgia that brings me back to Crystal version, no matter how much the games have improved. It's a feeling I doubt I'll ever find in another video game, but I'm okay with that. Every gamer has their childhood bottled in a video game - Crystal holds mine.

Pokemon Gold/Silver was a sequel done right. It not only fine tuned the gameplay of the original, but also added a lot of new features and doubled the amount of content found on the cartridge. Pokemon Crystal is essentially Pokemon Gold/Silver, but with a few notable extras that make a difference and enhance the, already incredible, experience.
Pros: Brilliant (near perfect) game design, fantastic Pokemon design, a TON of content, superbly realized world and lore, replay value is off the charts, the addition of animations and other world mysteries is a nice touch, great atmosphere
Cons: HM moves are underwhelming in battles, the need to trade some Pokemon in order for them to evolve, graphics and sound haven't aged all that well

The best version of the best generation of Pokemon. Not much to say about it that I haven't about gold/silver, but I spent loads of time with this one as well.

I've said what needs to be said about Pokémon already but, along with Yu-Gi-Oh cards, this game defined my childhood. [Gold/Crystal Version but I didn't want to put gold as well as crystal as they are very, very similar]
