    Saved!
This was the last movie I saw in theaters pre-pandemic. The stub I have for it says February 27th, 2020. I also saw Rise of Skywalker two weeks beforehand. The only movie I've risked going out to see since then was Dune.

Editing … I've seen a handful of movies from 2020-21 as screeners, though. Nothing from this year yet.

Editing … I miss going to the movies. I think the big screen/theater experience is a valuable one as a filmgoer; I'm not someone who just wants to see big budget marquee movies in theaters or something like that. And L.A. has some amazing repertory theaters too. I know maybe I could try going a bit more at this point (well maybe not right now because there's a surge) but I've wanted to be extra careful. I think people don't take Covid seriously anymore and I don't get that at all. So I don't really anticipate going to a theater in 2022. Hopefully next year I'll be able to go out a few times.

Editing … I think the rise of skywalker was the last film I saw in cinema. I'm just not a cinema fan, if I go I go with friends and make a day/night of it with a meal and beers which is the main reason to go out.

Editing … I'm a big film guy. My dad is in the industry and I've grown up knowing other people in it too, from family friends to now people I've grown up with. I mean, I'm in L.A. That said that's not necessarily what makes me like seeing movies in theaters; I'm sure some of them don't really care about the theater experience at this point, including my dad to an extent. But I do believe there's something special about going to a theater and sharing a viewing experience with many people who are all there for the same thing. And there are all of the little bits with it, like getting popcorn (or whatever), watching trailers, and so on, even outside the movie itself. It's probably one of my favorite things to do.

Editing … And some movies really are better in theaters. I first watched 2001 on a small TV in a high school classroom and found it boring and couldn't pay attention. About 4 years ago I went to see it in 70mm in a theater with hundreds of other people and my god is it an amazing movie to see on the big screen. Night and day. Comedies benefit too because you get the shared laughter, and shocking moments in movies are a shared reaction as well. Just the collective experience is a huge thing.

Editing … Back in the day of little tvs I guess cinema was brilliant, I certainly enjoyed it as a kid. These days though most people have huge TVs and surround sound. Or maybe I just reached an age where I hate people and hassle and getting parked and everything. Maybe if cinema was at the end of my road I'd go more often.

Editing … I love going to the theater. Usually go at least once a week but most of my moviegoing experience happens midday in the middle of the week when there's less than a dozen people in the theater. There's something so nice about the ritual of it. The thinking about the movie on the way in, the concessions, the trailers, and then the mulling over the movie on the trip home. And the theater just demands your attention, when I'm home there's so much distraction from the experience of the film.

Editing … Anytime something Hitchcock rereleases in theaters I'm there. The Birds on a TV versus The Birds in a theater is like night and day. Tarantino does a good job with special releases for his new films that are far superior to see in the theater. Seeing Gravity 3D in a theater with a full house and everybody just collectively holding their breath during that silent scene. Going to see Inside Llewyn Davis with a buddy of mine during a full on blizzard and having the whole theater to ourselves.... Going to the theater on rainy days when my family used to camp as a kid.

Editing … That's another thing I neglected to mention. When I'm home there are multiple screens around among many other distractions. It's incredibly easy to not pay full attention, to pause and come back, to miss things. People talk about the convenience of watching at home but I do think it hurts the experience. Sometimes I watch movies at home with my roommate and beause I'm with someone else I'm able to keep myself honest; I don't get as easily distracted in that situation. But I see him looking at his phone every once in awhile and I'm sure he's missing things. At a theater it's much easier to stay focused, in general, and I think you get more from the experience. If you can see a movie in theater, and it's something you really want to see, you should. You'll probably remember it better and it might hit you harder emotionally.

Editing … One day I hope to have a place where I could turn a room into a theater room. No windows, soundproof with a good sound system, pitch black with a projector and some nice recliners. Still wouldn't replace going to a theater but would definitely improve home movie watching.
