Some fairly good games but let down by the worst controller ever invented. Sticking with carts when Sony moved to discs didn't help either.

    3/10 is generous.

The Nintendo 64 is a fairly well done transitional platform for nintendo from 2d to 3d. It's library consisted of under 1000 games due to being abandoned by most 3rd parties but Nintendo more than did it's part with it's exclusives as well as enlisting the help of rare with it's exclaimed collectathon games as well as many other types of games on the platform. The flaws with this system stopping it from being a top 10 in my list are the library which compared to nintendo's other platforms is weak and the poor performance of games that only seemed to plague this platform in the 5th generation. However it's titles are still well remembered to today and has a hand in shaping the modern day 3d platformers even though rare is sadly not the same today.

The N64 launched exactly 18 years ago in North America.

It sucked then and it sucks now.

It boggles the mind that Nintendo survived this clusterfuck and went on to create at least three more mediocre home consoles since then.

    Fuck 'em.

    This was my review.

Editing … If I was forced to play an N64, I'm sure I could squeeze some fun out of it, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't rather be stuck with ANY other mainstream console from the last 30 years. The N64 was saved by the smallest handful of games, and the WiiU reeks of the same odor.

Editing … It's funny because there's a good case to be made for the system itself being bad--mainly the dorky controller and the fact that it used cartridges while the PSX used CDs and that should have given the PSX a clear edge software-wise. And I'm sure a lot of people feel that's true. For me, though, the N64 is by far the easiest system for me to make a Top 15 games out of. Doesn't help that I didn't have a PSX growing up. But also, I feel like most of the PSX's games are uglier than most of the N64's, because while the transitional 5th generation didn't treat realistic visual styles (such as those seen in Resident Evil, MGS, Silent Hill) well, more cartoonish games (such as OOT, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64) could get away more easily with the poor textures and "blocky" look, and are easier on the eyes to this day, imho. I realize my opinion is prolly unpopular, but eh.

Editing … Filly, see, it's the exact opposite for me. I find the N64's graphics to be ugly now and was never really impressed by them even back in the day (apart from Conker's BFD [dunno what sorcery they used to pull that one off], Banjo-Kazooie and SW:Rogue Squadron). PSOne's graphics, on the other hand, blew my young mind and to this day I think many of the classics still look great. MGS in particular still looks incredible to me.

Editing … N64 was graphically far superior to PS1. You just didn't have FMV. I like that it has so many platformers and cute games, it caters to my taste more than its competitors. There are so few third party games to get excited about though, far fewer than the Wii and even the Gamecube. It was inexcusable that in 1996 a console still used cartridges, I didn't really care that much but I knew it was a complete blunder. I didn't mind the shape of the controller, the problem with it was how cheap and poorly made it was, especially the analog stick. 3 star console out of 5.

Editing … I don't like the controller either. The graphics for both systems had their pros and cons. I grew up with a ps1 and can handle late 90s graphics in general better than a lot of people. Most of the geeks I've been friends with grew up with a nintendo 64, were shocked that I've never beaten a Zelda game, and would probably cry kittens if they saw Gries He's post. But most importantly: I really like Mario Golf.

It still had some of the best games of all time, regardless of whatever you might think, and it will always be an important part of video gaming history, forever representing the greatness that gaming was capable of back in 5th gen (alongside ps1 and saturn, primarily).

And thus commences the ultimate fanboy war.

I have owned a N64, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox360 and have frequently played on the other two leading consoles at friends houses.

The Xbox360 has a special place in my heart, same with the PS2. Both in my opinion, those companies finest hours. I have put hundreds of hours into both and adored both of them. Yes I prefer the 360 over the PS3, and only ever found Wii fun drunk with friends but they are still all great consoles, so before I talk about the N64 know that I hold no affiliation.

I got a N64 right after it was decomissioned by Nintendo and new games stopped being made. And whilst it still used defunct old cartrige systems (and battery saves... ew) along with a controller that at first just seemed plain silly it is almost impossable for anyone, paticularly someone of that generation or earlier to not fall in love with the console.

The libary of games was amazing.
