I was about to go and write my opinion for this series, only to be reminded that I did so when I first started watching. This show keeps getting better and better. It still suffers from the same issues most shounen anime do (my main gripe being that the female characters are treated as obvious afterthoughts and kind of over-sexualized, esp. for being teenagers) but it's quickly becoming a favorite of mine all the same.

Editing … As soon as he got into the school I realized I was basically watching Naruto and lost interest. :p Same thing happened with Attack on Titan.

Editing … That's weird. Attack on Titan seems really different from BNHA and Naruto, but I haven't watched AoT or Naruto. To be fair, I'm pickier about what shounen anime I watch, so maybe that's why I have more patience with the tropeyness.

Editing … Attack on Titan is edgier and gorier and I find the lore interesting. It makes you want to keep watching to find out what the deal is with the titans, where they come from, etc. For me, that's the only draw. Naruto and BNHA are better in the sense that everyone has unique powers and character designs. You're never confused about who is who because everyone looks COMPLETELY different and their appearance matches their abilities.

The premise for this show--a setting where people who have superpowers (in this series called "Quirks" of varying strength and utility) are commonplace--has been done before probably more times than I know, but there's an interesting twist: main character Izuku is an anomaly in the show's mythos, who was born without any innate Quirk, yet grew up with a fierce desire to be a superhero and protect people. When Izuku commits a serious act of bravery and heroism, a legendary Hero is inspired to pass on his Quirk to him. So there's this theme of trying to prove oneself with a gift that was earned, rather than inherited at birth. Where the show really, really shines is the art and animation. It's stunning. It's a far cry from a lot of series where all the characters look the same but with different eye colors and hair styles. Each one of them is very visually distinct, and I'm a sucker for great character art. It's pretty trope-y, but still an enjoyable, action-packed anime.
