I also finished the second difficulty level of the Drindy mode. Except I had to raise my lives to 5 and add the barrier power-up. And after I beat it, I got tired of this s**t. I can only bear playing roguelike puzzlers for so long, man...

Maybe if I want to waste time, I'll play through the other modes again. If I have absolutely nothing better to do. Beh.

Editing … You possessed me to boot up the game and take some screencaps of my scores/progress. They don't help much, since it doesn't state whether I actually cleared the stages. (let alone whether I used items and whether I'm playing on casual or classic. I'm on classic, btw.) But in the process, I notice the game's menus are even worse than I remembered. Even the bootup sequences and title screen are obnoxious to get through and oddly obfuscating to boot. It's official, I don't even really like this game anymore. (Before I thought it was just ok.)

Editing … To be fair, it was kinda cool when it started. Then everything slowly sunk into a clunky PS2 era collection? I mean, there's so many features that are really inconvenient. Like, give me my actual high scores! I don't care about a weekly Internet high score list. Sigh.

Editing … oh, I didn't know about any high score lists. Speaking of which, I did give Mr. Driller 2 on retroachievements a shot. They actually have leaderboards for the game, in addition to achievements. I got fourth place in the India stage on my first try. https://retroachievements.org/game/6011

For whatever reason, I pulled off a 1000-ft World Tour speed run on only three lives. I learned the art of barrel rolling away from falling blocks. I get it now. And my hands hurt.

I like this game, but damn, I sure had to mash on that control pad. Turns out that the best strategy is digging as quickly as possible, dodging falling blocks at the last minute and remembering the digging patterns for each rock formation. Easy as pie...

Notice how my score is slowly slipping because of these s**tty floaty controls. At least this download only cost $7.50. It was fun and all, but the arcade mode is s**t. The music is effin' awesome, but it still feels like s**t. Sigh...

Well, I can dig up to 500 meters deep in standard mode. I can't dig any further in "Classic" difficulty because the blocks' AI is rigged or something. I mean, this game replicates the exact sensation of an arcade. Including the part where I die whenever I'm playing good. Sigh...

Editing … Yeah man, I can now see why this version didn't get ported when it first came out. The controls are just wtf. I mean, I'm clearly pressing the right direction for dodging these blocks, but the game doesn't register it. It's as rigged as the original version of Pac-Man. I'm guessing that I'm supposed to use the analog joystick, but that doesn't make sense for f***in' four-way Mr. Driller, does it? Mrrrgh!

Editing … As far as I know, all the best parts are the bonus modes. But that doesn't make sense for a m*****f***in' timing-based game! I kept trying the arcade mode until my hands ached. And what the hell. I cannot go more than 761 meters. Maybe the publishers should've ported the other Drill games before this one...

Editing … I think it was crazy it came out on the Gamecube, which has the worst controller for this. It should have been PS2. (or obviously the GBA or DS, but I assume they wanted to make a "console quality" Driller game) Personally I didn't like the bonus modes. I'd rather just have the classic gameplay which probably makes me a bad person, lol. But even that aside, the game's presentation is obnoxious. There are so many menus. It's one of the downsides to having all these bonus modes. It could have been done better. (Like, just give me a list of the modes and then a list of difficulties.) I'm jumping in and out to find out what everything is. Then there's the concierge that greets you in each mode who I find annoying. It's also dumb that the shop takes up space on the world map (when it perhaps ought to have been a menu option within each attraction), and whatever the parade thing is. Bloated Driller game is bloated.

Editing … Yeah, I think I preferred the original art styles. With the Drill Land style, it looks way too similar to the Puyo Puyo Gamecube games. I mean, couldn't they do something original, like...I dunno...Godzilla style?

Editing … I like the art styles. It's a shame though because the audience for Driller games is arguably much narrower than the art style itself. Maybe there ought to be more spinoffs in the vein of Digging Strike. As in, have them set in the same world but with gameplay that is completely unrelated.

Editing … Well that's another puzzle franchise, so.. hmm. If they both use the same art style, there must be a reason they went that route. Which is good to know, I guess. Does seem like Puyo is more well off, somehow. The Sonic cross promotion might've helped with that.

As a connoisseur of puzzle games, I can say that this ranks among some of the absolute best. It's the ultimate collection of Mr. Driller and driller mini-games. The soundtrack is full of cute bangers. And there's even a hardcore rogue-like mode called the Hole of Druaga where the player has to navigate a map to find the key, warp to the final door and defeat Druaga.

I would complain that this whole game is way too hard for anyone to handle, but the awesome music and the beautiful cartoon graphics make everything far more soothing and bearable. I mean, Namco even added Taizo Hori, the original character from Dig Dug. That should give everyone a sense of the scope of this massive Mr. Driller collection and the content available.

There's also a story to this game, if anyone beats every single game variation. I recommend playing through all the game types before trying to take on the ordinary World Tour or Star Driller. To be honest, these variations are the best parts of the collection.
    8.5/10

Editing … I was disappointed in the story. For some reason going in I assumed this was going to be a full Mr. Driller epic. It's more substantial than the other games, sure, but not by much, and the other games actually have more charm imo. I was wondering why the villains are barely used in the other games and now I see why. They're completely forgettable and a little annoying. The series should just focus on the driller family & friends and the Undergrounders. The idea that there are no antagonists and that all the mayhem is simply caused by the Undergrounder's ineptitude is MUCH more hilarious.

Editing … Yeah, this game has its share of flaws. All the controls are probably better on any other system. I mean, the controls are floaty as all hell. I gave up trying to get past 1000 meters on the World Tour mode, because something doesn't feel right. This version wasn't made for arcade preciseness.

Editing … The story is also a joke. I wanted more Dig Dug lore, just because the characters seem like total drill nerds. On the other hand, it's only as deep as it needs to be, I guess. I mean, the controls kinda suck ass. So as long as everything's short, I won't feel like I missed out on anything. F***in' joycons.

Editing … Really? The controls seemed o.k. to me. The Lite's dpad is quite good for this sort of thing. But then again I did give up on the game after beating the main story and it's my second least favorite game in the series, barring JP only games and iphone ports. Maybe the controls were subliminally a factor.

Editing … I never use items. It feels like cheat codes. Although I wonder if they were intended and that's why the game seems pretty hard. I think it's hard for me to be convinced to use them since it tracks your score like an arcade game. If it were purely something like an rpg where the items were like equipment or character upgrades, maybe then their inclusion would feel more organic to me and I'd be more persuaded to use them. Another way is if the stages were literally impossible otherwise. (E.g. a stage w long stretches without air capsules, so you need to equip something that slows down the rate you lose air) Driller meets metroidvania, lol.

Whoever designed the Tower of Druaga adventure in DrillLand must've been bats**t insane. It's an awesome roguelike, but I have no clue how to get to the end. I mean, how do I stack those blocks to reach the top?

I'm not complaining though. The devs put a ton of work into this. And I still have no idea if there's an ending to the so-called story in the game.
