...This story still isn't quite the 3D Disney adventure that defies all expectations, but it's good. Dwayne Johnson actually gave his most convincing acting performance in this movie, probably because his character is a dope Polynesian mofo. On top of that, there's tons of down-to-earth emotional drama? I mean, it's weird to say that about a Disney movie, but there was a lot of deep dialogue exchanges about how it actually kinda sucks to be 'da "Chosen One."

The second half dragged a lot, but the storyboard artists came up with some pretty cool-looking "parting the Red Sea" setpieces at the end. Everything about this movie feels oddly...eclectic. If anyone is bored of the usual Disney princess snobs, they might want to try watching Moana for the super-chill islander experience, man.

Editing … I thought Disney was all about the down to earth emotional drama these days. Not to say it's a bad thing but they all get deep now.

The second act feels kind of... aimless? After Maui joins her and that takes away from the movie for me, but otherwise, top knotch Disney animated film. Lots of great music, and there is something about Moana, the protagonist, that is so "real" and relatable that even some of the other recent Princess mascots lack.

Moana's on US Netflix and that's pretty damned impressive. Moana legit has some of the best Disney music, and overall the film is very memorable.
Disney: "You like Moana on Netflix? Well, what can I say, except 'you're welcome'?"

I told a friend he should watch this. Today, I went on Steam to see 71 messages from him, complaining about the movie as he watched. From the moment he started, he was bothered that the characters were too black. Well, he says "it's not the color, it's their culture and weird music." But he stills refers to someone as a nigger for being too black. Also he doesn't like that some bits don't use english.

The promotional generic covers of the songs in Moana are pretty garbage
I mean the Alessia Cara version of How Far I'll Go and the Jordan Fisher cover of You're Welcome
Here, this is How Far I'll Go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPAbx5kgCJo
This is the garbage version (also heard in the Moana credits) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNra8eK0K6k

Editing … Wow, I thought the first cover was bad, but man they eviscerated You're Welcome. Besides it sounding like shit, why bother producing a music video that has nothing to do with anything? It's a song about a Polynesian god, why the hell is there a split screen between NYC and London? THE TAPESTRY WHERE ON YOUR SKIN?! YOU DON'T HAVE A SINGLE TATTOO ON DISPLAY!

Moana doesn't have a smart story like Frozen or Zootopia. Like Aladdin, it's not a clever movie, just one that's executed really, really damn well, with gorgeous backgrounds, likable characters, and pretty songs. On that last part, I enjoyed this more as a musical than any Disney movie in quite some time. The typical Disney cliches are there, which is not a complaint for a guy like me who finds that stuff generally charming, but the adventure contains some pretty weird parts that elevate it all for me. I was not expecting some of the creatures they encounter along the way, or the way the movie gives the ocean personality. I was actually reminded of Samurai Jack or Castle in the Sky at certain bits. I enjoyed it from start to finish and really want to see it again. It charmed me in the way only Disney can and I didn't want it to end. I'll totally pay for the blu-ray.

Editing … This is the first movie I saw in the theater since Amazing Spider-Man 1. I was surprised how low ticket prices are. They screw you on the popcorn and drink of course, but if you don't get that, going to the movies alone is only 3 dollars in Springdale.

I liked it a lot! I avoided watching the trailers and went in with zero expectations, being somewhat tired of the Disney princess formula and what I knew about the film didn't really excite me. To my surprise, it was really fun! Moana was a standout and compelling female character, and not the clumsy and quirky Rapunzel/Anna/Ariel copy-paste Disney leading lady. The songs were really fun, though I don't really remember any of them too well in particular; but at least I won't have an earworm like Let It Go bother me for eternity. Maui also had a different relationship with the Moana, as even three-quarters through the movie, they continued to bicker and I wasn't sure if Moana could really trust him. How they opened up to each other felt real, and not forced like in other Disney films. While the film didn't break any new ground, I would say it is probably the best iteration of their beloved formula since Beauty and the Beast. 2016 really has been a good year for Disney animated films, and I'm glad to see a new renaissance of quality films from the studio.
