Pretty great animated wuxia, but honestly, its biggest fault is its length. The lack of it. The film's got a lot of awkward exposition, and constantly fell victim to telling, not showing, something that could have been remedied by extending the movie. tbh it should have been shot as an animated epic, 3-4 hours. Then it'd be top-tier legendary animation.

Editing … I fell asleep halfway through the movie. The concept was interesting, but like you said, the characters spent too much time telling us how each attack works and how the movie should end. By the end, I kept wondering why I bothered watching this in the theater with mom. Yeah. We were bored.

I thought that this was the name of a 20 year old anime or something. Now I'm curious about it.

Really good movie. The story and characters are more involving than I was expecting.

The animation is excellent and the music was very fitting to the movie, but where this movie really shines is with its characters. All of them are very likeable and well written to the point where you care about them and relate to them. All the characters, and the story, end on a very good note.

My only real quibbles with this film are pretty minor. There's a particular plot point regarding a character that I thought was pretty predictable, and I don't really get the motivation of the villain. He has a reason for why he wants what he wants, and a good one, but I feel that some backstory to why he really wants it could've made the character more menacing and impactful.

But really, nothing that ruined my enjoyment. It's the best movie i've seen all year.

Finally a movie to take the kids to that didn't make me want to gouge my eyes and eardrums and brain and heart and other vital organs out and scalp myself.

Editing … xD It's really great too! My favorite animated movie of the year so far (slightly above Zootopia in my eyes)

Editing … Yeah, I liked it a lot! I like stop motion, I'm happy to rewatch Paranorman and Coraline whenever the kids want.

I’d like to start this off saying that it was very appropriate for me to watch this film at this time in my life. I saw this with my roommate on opening weekend in a near empty theater (such as shame by the way…). Despite sharing the same room as a crying baby and an obnoxious mom who laughed at all the worst jokes, I felt alive in that place. As a student in college studying animation, staring at Laika’s masterwork on screen put all my suspicions to about my decision to rest. The hundreds of thousands of dollars I will be spending to get myself on the right path will be well worth it if I get the opportunity to work on a project like Kubo.

But that’s enough of that, I should talk about the movie itself. While I don’t think that I enjoyed it as much as Coraline, I still think that this work should be applauded. Let’s just get this out of the way, Kubo and the Two Strings is one of the most visually impressive animated movies ever made. It’s breathtaking. It’s well directed, the character designs were top notch, the voice acting was consistently solid, and every shot in the film just gets my imagination going and makes me want to draw. While the themes of the film were excellent, I do feel like the writing was somewhat lacking in some instances. The beginning of the movie was a lot stronger than the rest, which felt much slower in comparison. By the time the main villain’s motives were revealed at the end, I still left my head scratching and I wish they handled it better. Also, the humor missed the mark more often than not, especially when it came to Matthew McConaughey’s goofy character. Still, this film is largely successful and unlike anything else out there. We need more films like this one and I really hope that Laika will have more success in the box office than their films have been getting with this one.
