The Wiimake of this came out 12 years ago, and goddamn do I wish it would get ported to Steam or something. Not only would I rather not pay at least $60 for a copy on ebay, but judging from emulated footage on Dolphin it would look amazing in HD.

I love this game to death, but it's so short. Just when I was really getting into the controls and the hard boss fights, it ends. I guess I should download the sequel sometime. I want Klonoa 3.

Editing … Have you never played the sequel? It's a real gem as well. I've never played the original. I might get around to emulating the Wii version some day.

Editing … I've always wanted a full playthrough of Klonoa 2, just for some closure to his somewhat sad habit of warping from world to world. The Klonoa series always needed more support, because the story is well told and the 2.5D graphical effects still look amazing. And I have a fetish for furries with Pac-Man hats.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile's revolutionary take on the genre is really cool, but not without its fair share of problems. However, it needs to be commended for not only trying new things in the gameplay department, but also for giving a lot of attention to the story that sadly is often neglected in the genre.
Pros: Absolutely charming music and characters, for the genre unusually ambitious story(telling), neat if a bit simple level design and boss fights, cool gameplay mechanics, brought revolutionary gameplay ideas to the table
Cons: 2.5D platforming, hit detection and checkpoint system are all flawed (but it only becomes annoying at the very end of the game), once you beat a stage you can't go back to it, the last platforming level is naturally the hardest one yet, but also far too long followed by a boss fight that accentuates all gameplay problems, gameplay and level design aren't strong enough to warrant repeated playthroughs

Editing … For me this is a high 9, Klonoa 2 might address some of those concerns you have. You forgot to give points for the saddd ending. Klonoa 2's ending is even sadder in a romantic way, that was when he went from regular character to husbando material.

Editing … I didn't want to spoil it :P But yeah, the ending really is something else for the genre. And it was for the most part an 8 up until the last platforming level and Ghadius fight. Then it got brought down to a 7 because those were hard, verging on being frustrating because of all the problems I listed. It's like they concentrated all the faults of the game into that single level and it went on and on. Oh and I did play Klonoa 2 and I remember liking it even more, but I forgot almost everything about it since I last played it. Would LOVE to see it become available on the PSN!

Editing … That would be cool, maybe if it did well we'd get a Klonoa 3, although I don't know if any of the people behind the original series are in the Bandai Namco offices.

Klonoa is short, but the entire experience is an amazing journey through colorful fields, caves and castles in space. The story encompasses a whole range of drama that almost no other platformer has dared to replicate. The diverse soundtrack is a gorgeous mix of whimsical guitar and bagpipe arrangements, intense techno drum beats and surreal synthesizer sounds.

I really feel like Klonoa brought back the dramatic impact of drama, orchestral music and immense creativity that was missing in platformers. Feel free to argue with me, but there hasn't been any platformer that gave me the feels quite like Klonoa. It's incredibly under-rated even to this day.

The game has some great mechanics. It's a shame they are only fully explored in the final stages and the unlockable, 'much harder than anything in the main game' bonus stage, as I found myself not quite needing to focus for the first half of the game or so. No complaints about the audiovisual aspect though, and Klonoa himself is quite a likeable character.

One of the more inventive platformers to appear on the Playstation, the original Klonoa seemed to only get the acclaim and love it deserved as a cult hit years later, now recongized as probably the first game to blur the lines of 2D and 3D platforming, or 2.5D platformer. While Klonoa himself is just a 2D sprite, the level design requires you to think in three dimensions, resulting in puzzle possibilities not possible in the 16-bit era. The game is short on levels but it's all quality. The world is very cute but has character. And the story is unusually involved for this simple genre. Add in a nice difficulty curve and you have what should be considered one of the best platformers of its' generation.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is a great 2.5D platformer that had revolutionary game mechanics for its time and still holds up well to this day.
