Editing … In the case of CPUs affected by Meltdown (basically ever Intel CPU) the solution stated by CERT and almost every single tech professional is to replace the CPU with anything else.

Editing … This isn't a matter of backdoors. This is a matter of the entire industry evolving an inherently flawed architecture for CPUs, meaning: basically every CPU is affected, and the only real solution is to make completely new CPUs with a completely new architecture, which could take a decade to develop. New CPUs based on today's architecture might not be able to fix the issue. Intel might have to recall CPUs, maybe we'll have a class action suit. An OS-level patch for Meltdown (Intel-only vuln) will slow performance by 5%-30%, and then Spectre (AMD/Intel/ARM), so far, can't be patched at all. Phones are affected too. These are architectural flaws.

Editing … So is this why my Kaspersky has updated every day for the last week and Windows keeps telling me Defender and Kaspersky are both turned off when my Kaspersky is clearly on (the Windows 10 update says it causes some problems with certain computer protection programs)? Good to know I suppose. Sleep now, panic later.

Editing … Spectre exploits are in the wild now. These affect all CPUs, so if you're not using Adblock and Ghostery, START USING THEM. Google Adsense is going to let through some nasty stuff. If your antivirus is trying to work against the exploit, their solution would be to stop scripts in your browser--and going with noscript is the safest way to go, now. Sure can get inconvenient though. Adblock and Ghostery should be enough.

Editing … Demonstrations of how easy it is to use these exploits to steal passwords only take a few seconds, btw. Meltdown just requires use of a script, and even savvy twelve-year olds will be irresponsibly throwing them around. All it takes is javascript. Seriously, when is the class action?
