Although this version is not the official Gradius sequel, it is the first Gradius game to dabble with using 3D graphical systems. Consider it the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night version of a Gradius game--using 2D sprites in a 3D environment. I've always felt like it captured more of the spirit of the original games--using fast-paced 2D sprites with unpredictable movements. There's also multiple paths, making it possible to choose which boss to fight. It's my favorite out of all the next-gen Gradius games.

There's also more of a storyline--apparently the Bacterian empire destroyed 99 percent of the planet of Gradius.
