I loved this game as a kid! So you've decided to try your luck in the Californian gold rush of the late 1840s - you start off in Brooklyn and have three options to get to the West Coast: across the country, by ship across Panama (back then the Panama canal did not exist so you also had to trek across the jungle), or by ship via South America, all of which have their own risks and hazards. I learned a lot about the gold rush and how travelling from East Coast to West Coast wasn't quite as simple as it is these days. Perhaps this game even started off my interest in American history. In any case, it was fun and educational. It was also one of the last games created using Sierra's legendary AGI parser.
