Rob and I were bored yesterday and picked up Ultimate Edition again to try and work on that Insane campaign achievement. Just like in the original version, the mine cart section is by far the most bullshit section of the game to play on Insane because there is such a small margin of permissible error. If you don't pick off each Wretch on the cieling with pinpoint accuracy and efficiency, one will land in your cart and blow up, killing you instantly. I think it took us 15 or 20 attempts yesterday.

Just beat the GOW:UE campaign on Normal difficulty. Rob and I finished it in 3 days (and that's only because we've had work the last few days)! Sure feels short, and that's including the extra chapter that was previously only in the PC version of GOW1. We're going for beating it on Insane next though, so that should up the ante. Already have more than 60% of the gamerscore in UE.

Editing … I was just about to ask if the remaster included the extra chapter, but this answered my question

So I hate to admit this because I'm pretty opposed to the trend of HD remasters for EVERYTHING on principle, but I'm really liking GOW: Ultimate Edition. I'm a lot more consistent in the mutliplayer than I ever was in Gears 3, and I played that multiplayer on and off for 4 years. I wish they hadn't skimped on the characters, seeing how they included some Gears 3 characters but not all of them, while skipping over series veterans like Tai (and only 2 playable female characters when Gears 3 had several more? Why?). Going between 60fps MP and 30fps singe-player is also kind of jarring. And I wish they'd included the good "modern" twists Gears 3 offered like the medals and ribbons, arcade campaign, kill cam and ghost cam, and so on. But I'm still really enjoying the game, and it will be a worthy time suck for me until Gears 4 comes out and possibly beyond.

Editing … Good HD remasters are worth it, I think GOW really deserved one too seeing as how old and iconic it was. I'm playing the Halo remake for 360 atm and the temptation to pick up the Gears games is killing me. If I get the job I applied for I think I'll get an Xone, even if it just becomes a Halo and Gears box lol.

@Papissama, why no page for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition? Is it because it's essentially another version of Gears 1? Just checking before I make a page for it.

Funny enough, I never touched the single-player or multiplayer in this game but played only the co-op with my brother. It has an okay story (at least it's there) and some fun game-play. Co-op was so much fun, but I wish the game was a bit longer. Damn that chainsaw is fun.

Gears of War is a solid shooter - all the weapons feel varied yet balanced, blind fire has a decent level of accuracy without being overpowered, and there's just the right amount of screen shake when you're hit. It's a shame that much else falls short. The story is for the most part entirely absent, and when it dares to poke it's ugly head, it's plain boring. The protagonist is insanely unlikeable - a one-dimensional, one-emotion, macho-prat, who couldn't feel less relatable, and the side characters are less annoying yet just as shallow and forgettable. Towards the end the gameplay does begin to get repetitive, which is a shame as I found the non-shooting Beserker sections to be the most intense and fun parts of the game.

The graphics were a step up from everything else when it launched but there's more to it than that. It practically invented cover shooting and didn't stop there. The campaign was great, if short and a bit lacking storywise. The multiplayer is probably better than in Gears 2 and there's still a lot of untapped potential in the ideas behind it.
Gears 2 had more polish, story and it had Horde but it was missing the Kryll, the Berserkers (my favourite parts of either Gears) and the great boss battles so I keep coming back to the first too.
