Final Fantasy VIII (ファイナルファンタジーVIII, Fainaru Fantajī Eito) is a 1999 role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix). It is the eighth major installment in the Final Fantasy series. The game was the series' second 3D installment and the first to consistently use realistically proportioned characters, and introduced a new magic system to the Final Fantasy franchise which removed magic point-based spell-casting.

      Editing … I'm looking forward to replaying this once I finish university for the summer. I bought the PS4 Remaster for cheap on a sale. It was always one of my favourites when I was younger so it will be fun to revisit.

    My attachment to this game is unhealthily strong, it was my childhood passion and I've always felt a really strong connection with it. I love pretty much everything about it but the feeling it gives me is the reason why it's my favourite game. No other game will ever be able to dethrone it.
    But to give more solid reasons as well as that: I love FF8's world, it's one of the few game worlds I've played in that I can actually picture people living in. It's an awesome blend of retro, modern and futuristic themes that works far too well and it has some really nice locations. The Junction system is marmite but I love it, something about it has always felt really engaging to me, and the feeling of power you get when you learn how to exploit it is awesome. The music IMO is the best in the series, but that might be because of my attachment to it. It has the best summons system in the series, as it makes them feel almost like minor characters rather than just spells for you to cast, and I really like the way it works together with the Junction system. Though I guess FFX does a similar thing. I love the visuals, at the time the cutscenes were mindblowing, and because of my childhood love for it I really love the graphic style it and Parasite Eve have, and I love the old prerendered environments too.
    As for the story and characters, admittedly FF8 is pretty lacking in the character department for the most part, most of the party members are just kind of there, but the story that FF8 actually has is much better than people give it credit for, it's just very poorly told. The most important plot details are hinted at really subtly instead of actually made clear to the player. I'm considering making a YouTube video or something about it someday exposing its 'hidden' story for everyone to see. Ultimecia is a pretty interesting and sympathetic villain when you understand what's going on.

    I'd rather Final Fantasy VIII were getting the remake instead of VII. I find the in game character models really ugly in VIII now, which isn't a problem for me with the more cartoony VII and IX models. It'd also be nice to have the gameplay tightened up to where the enemies don't level up with you so that either you leveling up is helpful or you don't level up at all and your power is just determined by the magic you junction. Hearing that intense, bombastic music orchestrated would be cool too.

    Objectively it's a good game.
    Subjectively I can't stand it's characters nor plot.

    Attaching haste to the speed stat and seeing the ATB bar fill up faster is one of my favorite gameplay moments in an RPG.

      Editing … I always made sure to give Squall high strength cause that R1 gunshot blast was really easy to use. I always assumed the other characters had similar things that were just much harder to use, so I would always hit R1 when they attacked, not realizing that when they did extra damage, that was just a regular old critical hit, not me hitting R1 with good timing.

      Editing … I've beaten Chrono Trigger. I didn't like it. Nothing about it was as cool as FFVIII's Junction system or FMV or emo protagonist. Of course on that last I'm using the word cool loosely.

      Editing … I have to "shamefully" admit that I played FF8, and I didn't love it. I liked it. It was good, but after playing 6, 7 and Tactics and being hyped as hell, it just fell a bit flat.

      Editing … It's the third in the Holy Trinity. It's not for everyone, many simply don't understand it at all (and lots of so-called "modern age gaymurr" scrubs especially). Ivalice should not be brought into this comparison, tho. Because it's not a part of Holy Trinity. It is it's own kind of an animal altogether. It's rated separately from "numerical" FFs. It shouldn't be even compared with Final Fantasy XII, even though they're same universe. If yoiu wish to compare Final Fantasy Tactics with something, compare it with Fire Emblem, Vandal Hearts, Ogre Battle, Hoshigami, Saiyuki, Shining Force trilogy and etc. Personally, even though I always loved all three members of the Holy Trinity with an equal passion, I always preferred the absolutely top-notch PERFECTION that is Final Fantasy VIII, over FF VII. And don't misunderstand me on this - Final Fantasy VIII is not even remotely close to being my very first "FF"-branded game ever played (that was FF V), so I'm not affected by the globally-spread disease known as "pink nostalgia glasses".

      Editing … Well, even I wouldn't go as far as to put it at the very top of my personal "most favorite RPGs" list, mainly due to the fact that I've played a true sh*tton of games in those 28 years of me being a gamer, so I've really seen things you people wouldn't believe, I've played some sh*t that would turn you white. Like tears in the rain. But it's at the solid 4-th place nonetheless, yes. Also - it's quite funny to see that you've rated "Terror From The Deep" (just outright LOLWUT?) higher than it WHILE putting Episode 5 higher than X-COM, in your list of "Top 50 all-time favorite games". That's just hilarious.
