Really fun and really good but doesn't hold a candle when compared to Chrono Trigger. I feel like this game has too many characters and the limited play-time did not allow the characters to fully "evolve". Everything else is superb though and I love the ability-learning system with the Magicites. Strangely enough I have already given the game a 8.0 despite never beaten it (I did play it once up to Kefka's Tower but then quit because I got stuck somewhere and lost motivation). Now that I've beaten it, I'll give it a 8.5.

Editing … Honestly, I think FF6 would have worked better as a separate video game series.

Oh my fuck a couple people have actually liked my negative opinion on this game! Rarely have I ever felt less alone.

FFVI had the best intro of any video game ever in the history of humankind.

Introduces far too many characters too quickly for me to care about them, the plot doesn't grab me, Kefka annoys me, and this is by far my least favorite Final Fantasy visually, plus some of the humor feels really out of place. Had to force myself to get even 8 hours in. I prefer V's Saturday morning cartoon feel and job system.

This was either going to be 1st or 2nd place. Ultimately, I put Chrono Trigger ahead because its tracks tend to work better as standalone pieces. That said, FF6's use of recurring leitmotifs and chords between songs gives its soundtrack a more cohesive feeling than almost any other I can think of. The songs for towns and regions are atmospheric, character themes are distinct and easily related to their characters, and battle themes like "The Decisive Battle" are among the best in the series. The opera scene has great music accompanying it, despite the primitive "vocals," and "Dancing Mad" remains the best final boss theme of all time, due to its combination of majesty, intensity, symbolism, and correlation with the action.

You had to play Final Fantasy VI at, or at least near, its time of release to truly love it. It's plain to see how revolutionary the game was back then, but time has trampled over it. Certain aspects of the game have aged so horribly that the game itself became an exercise in patience. Also, a friendly warning: if you're tempted to play the PS1 port - don't. It's horrendous!
Pros: Great soundtrack, superb and diverse storytelling, solid story and characters, attempts to mix things up in the gameplay department, great sidequests, lots of secrets
Cons: The random enemy encounter rate is TOO DAMN HIGH, tedious gameplay and boring combat, unappealing visuals (although technically impressive for its time), uninspired and poor level design, overly long dungeons, some of the sidequests are too difficult to track down without a guide, PS1 port suffers frequent and lenghty downtimes even for the most basic of actions

Editing … I agree with you about the random encounters being too high. I still like it though, I think it's still a good JRPG even today. It's certainly better than most modern attempts in my eyes.

Editing … Yeah I never cared for this one either, never for any particular reason I just didn't enjoy it, stopped about half way through. It doesn't help that both it's predecessor and successor are so damned good.

Editing … Can't say that I have, nod. Is emulating it the only chance of playing it nowadays? Unless I own a SNES, that is. Which I don't. :/

After stumbling with poorly received games like Final Fantasy XIII and the original Final Fantasy XIV, it’s time for Square Enix to restore our faith in the Final Fantasy brand. What do you want to see in Final Fantasy XV? Let us know below.
